Bhakti ratnavali. 4.42-44
ko nāma loke puruṣārtha-sāravit purā-kathānāṁ bhagavat-kathā-sudhām āpīya karṇāñjalibhir bhavāpahām aho virajyeta vinā naretaram
(Maitreya to Vidura) Who is there that the essence comprehends, Of the supreme gain and highest of ends, That would not with his ears the sweets imbibe, Of those antique narratives that describe The deeds of illustrious Bhagavan? Alas, he must be other than a man! 4.42 (3.15.50)
nūnaṁ daivena vihatā ye cācyuta-kathā-sudhām hitvā śṛṇvanty asad-gāthāḥ purīṣam iva viḍ-bhujaḥ
(Kapila to Devahuti) Indeed, they are ill fated who repine From discourses on Acyuta divine; But rather hear the songs of vulgar deeds, As the brute that upon excreta feeds! 4.43 (3.32.19)
yas tūttamaḥ-śloka-guṇānuvādaḥ saṅgīyate ’bhīkṣṇam amaṅgala-ghnaḥ tam eva nityaṁ śṛṇuyād abhīkṣṇaṁ kṛṣṇe ’malāṁ bhaktim abhīpsamānaḥ
(Suka to Pariksit) Whoever the love aspires to gain, And devotion to Krishna without stain, Should the sin destroying exploits rehearse, Of him who is praised in exquisite verse; And always everyday without respite, Listen to those accounts with pure delight. 4.44 (12.3.15)
itthaṁ parasya nija-vartma-rirakṣayātta- līlā-tanos tad-anurūpa-viḍambanāni karmāṇi karma-kaṣaṇāni yadūttamasya śrūyād amuṣya padayor anuvṛttim icchan
(Suka to Pariksit) Whoever thus to the Supreme aspires, And pure devotion for his feet desires, Should hear the deeds that Yadu's Lord performs, When incarnate, assuming diverse forms; His own path of righteousness to support, He acts appropriately as in sport; The hearing of his exploits thus maintained, Release from the bonds of action is gained. 4.45 (10.90.49)
Thus ends the Fourth Strand in the necklace of gems, Bhakti Ratnavali, Consisting of gem-like verses, from Srimad Bhagavatam, selected and arranged by Vishnu Puri.

Good morning, good night, good morrow, or any time of day. Well, patient and laborious reader, commencing now with the fifth Strand of Bhakti Ratnavali under the heading, Kirtanam; On Recitation.
idaṁ hi puṁsas tapasaḥ śrutasya vā sviṣṭasya sūktasya ca buddhi-dattayoḥ avicyuto ’rthaḥ kavibhir nirūpito yad-uttamaśloka-guṇānuvarṇanam
(Narada to Vyasa) The wise ones have determined and maintain That mankind can the best fulfilment gain, The fruit of study and austerity, Grand sacrifice and pious charity, By hearing the accounts thence to rehearse The glory of the Lord in charming verse. 5.1 (1.5.22)
tad eva ramyaṁ ruciraṁ navaṁ navaṁ tad eva śaśvan manaso mahotsavam tad eva śokārṇava-śoṣaṇaṁ nṛṇāṁ yad uttamaḥśloka-yaśo ’nugīyate
(Suta to the sages) The speech is but deceptive, false and vain That does not the hallowed glory proclaim Of the supra sensible Deity, Illustrious Adhoksaja Hari; That speech alone is true, worthy and blest, And holy, when his virtues are expressed. 5.2 (12.12.49) The delectation and felicity Of this grows with renewing novelty; 'Tis as a festival of wondrous kind, Of ever new delight within the mind; Indeed, it also drains away and dries The deep ocean of human miseries; Which is to constantly hear and rehearse, In song, the Lord renowned in choicest verse. 5.3 (12.12.50)

Bhakti Ratnavali. 5.4-7
na yad vacaś citra-padaṁ harer yaśo jagat-pavitraṁ pragṛṇīta karhicit tad vāyasaṁ tīrtham uśanti mānasā na yatra haṁsā niramanty uśik-kṣayāḥ तद्वाग्विसर्गो जनताघविप्लवो यस्मिन् प्रतिश्लोकमबद्धवत्यपि । tad-vāg-visargo janatāgha-viplavo yasmin prati-ślokam abaddhavaty api nāmāny anantasya yaśo ’ṅkitāni yat śṛṇvanti gāyanti gṛṇanti sādhavaḥ
(Narada to Vyasa) Embellished speech that does not glorify Lord Hari, who the world doth purify, Is like a sacred shrine for screeching crows; The which is not resorted to by those Who are like noble swans, and who betake Their way to the tranquil Manasa lake. 5.4 (1.5.10) But such works of literature as there be Though fraught with some irregularity In each couplet, yet devoutly acclaims The infinite Ones' fame and diverse names, Are to the sainted souls exceeding dear, Which they recite with joy and love to hear; Which they also acknowledge and approve, And which the sins of the world doth remove. 5.5 (1.5.11)
āpannaḥ saṁsṛtiṁ ghorāṁ yan-nāma vivaśo gṛṇan tataḥ sadyo vimucyeta yad bibheti svayaṁ bhayam
(Shaunaka to Suta) Whoever calls his name, e'en in distress, Or in a state of utter helplessness, Is certainly straightway from danger clear, For even Fear himself holds him in fear. 5.6 (1.1.14)
tato ’nyathā kiñcana yad vivakṣataḥ pṛthag dṛśas tat-kṛta-rūpa-nāmabhiḥ na karhicit kvāpi ca duḥsthitā matir labheta vātāhata-naur ivāspadam
(Narada to Vyasa) Apart from that whatever you construe And describe with a differential view, The mind in forms and designations lost, Were like a boat without an anchor tossed. 5.7 (1.5.14)
pragāyataḥ sva-vīryāṇi tīrtha-pādaḥ priya-śravāḥ āhūta iva me śīghraṁ darśanaṁ yāti cetasi
(Narada to Vyasa) And when I sing his mighty deeds divine, He joys to hear, whose feet are as a shrine; Straightway within my heart himself he shows, As one invited, and his grace bestows. 5.8 (1.6.33)

(Suta to the sages) Whatever mighty deeds wondrous and bold, The Lord hath done, are worthy to be told; And those who seek their welfare should resort To his service, and praise his divine sport. 5.9 (1,18.10)
etan nirvidyamānānām icchatām akuto-bhayam yogināṁ nṛpa nirṇītaṁ harer nāmānukīrtanam
(Suka to Pariksit) Therefore, it has been established, O king, The epithets of Hari thus to sing, Is the best means for yogis and for seers, And persons that would be rid of their fears. 5.10 (2.1.11)
etad dhy ātura-cittānāṁ mātrā-sparśecchayā muhuḥ bhava-sindhu-plavo dṛṣṭo hari-caryānuvarṇanam
(Narada to Vyasa) Indeed, the minds of those fraught with desire, Whose faculties to sense-objects aspire; Can safely cross this existential sea, On the boat of remembrance of Hari. 5.11 (1.6.34)

(Brahma eulogy to Narayana) His divine descents and wonderful play, His names his pure excellences convey; And whoso cleaves to him, breathing his last, Is cleansed of sin for many life-times passed, And straightway, in supreme blessing reposed, The life immortal is to him disclosed; I seek refuge in him the One adored, The birthless and imperishable Lord. 5.12 (3.9.15)

Bhakti Ratnavali. 5.13-17. Here Vishnu Puri cites a long passage from the discourse of the Vishnu dutas to the Yama dutas touching the reasons for their supervention in the case of Ajamila. Because it is long passage I omit the slokas which can be investigated by reference. This is the opening of the speech.
(Vishnu's emissaries to those of Yama)
This person* here has expiation done, For his sins in millions of life-times gone; Since he hath called, in his calamity, The all auspicious name of Lord Hari. 5.13
Though he was a sinner, it must be owned, He has for his sins utterly atoned; When he did loud four syllables exclaim, Naa-raa-ya-na, Lord Hari's holy name. 5.14
A thief, a wine bibber, hateful to friends, Brahmacide, who his teacher's bed ascends; Who kills a woman, parent, cow, beside, Of heinous conduct and a regicide. 5.15
All these in gross iniquity involved, Can have all trace of deadly sin absolved, By loud chanting of Vishu's name refined, Whence he becomes established in the mind. 5.16
A sinner is not so well purified, Though vows of expiation be applied; That Vedic seers in their codes indite, As ordained in the penance, vow and rite; To that extent as when he does exclaim, The holy syllables of Hari's name; Which evokes remembrance of the glory Of him who is praised in fine poetry. 5. 17 (6.2.7-11)
*This person, Ajamila

Here is the rest of the speech,
For expiations, although well begun, Again the mind does on the wrong path run, But who release from actions' bonds would gain, And to the serene existence attain, Should recount and recite, most certainly, The exploits and qualities of Hari. 5.18
Therefore, do not attempt to drag him hence, He has atoned for all sin and offence, For he did in the throws of death exclaim, Attentively, th'illustrious One's name. 5.19
Whether by allusion or merry jest, To fill a tune, disdainfully addressed, The recitation of Vaikuntha's name, Is known to remove of all sin the stain. 5.20
Whoever falling, slipping off his feet, Belaboured, bitten, tormented by heat, Who calls Hari, although inadvertent, Does not deserve such dire punishment. 5.21
As transgression may be weighty or light, Hard and easy penance the wise indict; Who know the degree of the taint or stain, And accordingly penances ordain. 5.22
Vows, penances and charity alone, For sins committed certainly atone, But serving the Lord's feet within the heart, The source, unrighteousness, will thence depart. 5.23
Who knowingly or unknowing exclaims, The Lord Uttamasloka's divine names, In his glory doth sins of man retire, As burns indiscriminately hot fire. 5.24
As physic on the sick a cure bestows, Although he of its power little knows; So even as he knows not the prospect, This mantra of the name will have effect. 5.25 (6.2.13-19)

Bhakti Ratnavali. 5.26-28
evaṁ sa viplāvita-sarva-dharmā dāsyāḥ patiḥ patito garhya-karmaṇā nipātyamāno niraye hata-vrataḥ sadyo vimukto bhagavan-nāma gṛhṇan
(Suka's observations on Ajamila to Pariksit)
Indeed he did from righteousness repine, Degenerate, lord of a concubine; Unfaithful to his vows, a recreant, In vulgar pleasures thus his life he spent; But merely calling upon the Lord's name, He did ultimate liberation gain. 5.26 (6.2.45)
nātaḥ paraṁ karma-nibandha-kṛntanaṁ mumukṣatāṁ tīrtha-pādānukīrtanāt na yat punaḥ karmasu sajjate mano rajas-tamobhyāṁ kalilaṁ tato ’nyathā
No better expedient is defined, To cut the cordage of actions that bind, For those who seek for salvation sublime, Sing of him whose feet are a holy shrine; Elsewise, again attached to actions' fruits, Passion and ignorance his mind pollutes. 5.27 (6.2.46)
mriyamāṇo harer nāma gṛṇan putropacāritam ajāmilo ’py agād dhāma kim uta śraddhayā gṛṇan
While he at death intent to call his son, Called upon Hari's name, the Mighty One; This Ajamil secured the supreme gain, What then of those who loving faith maintain? 5.28 (6.2.49)

Bhakti Ratnavali. 5.29/30
nāmoccāraṇa-māhātmyaṁ hareḥ paśyata putrakāḥ ajāmilo ’pi yenaiva mṛtyu-pāśād amucyata
(Yama to his emissaries) Behold, my boys, the greatness and the gain, In articulation of Hari's name, Since Ajamil, of notoriety, Was straightway from the ropes of death set free! 5.29 (6.3.23)
etāvatālam agha-nirharaṇāya puṁsāṁ saṅkīrtanaṁ bhagavato guṇa-karma-nāmnām vikruśya putram aghavān yad ajāmilo ’pi nārāyaṇeti mriyamāṇa iyāya muktim
This much then, it should be known to suffice, For the sure eradication of vice; Which is to sing the deeds and holy fame Of the One illustrious and his name; Since even Ajamil, this sinful one, While crying earnestly for his fond son, At death the name of Narayana cried, And salvation attained, beatified. 5.30 (6.3.24)

Bhakti Ratnavali. 5.31/32
prāyeṇa veda tad idaṁ na mahājano ’yaṁ devyā vimohita-matir bata māyayālam trayyāṁ jaḍī-kṛta-matir madhu-puṣpitāyāṁ vaitānike mahati karmaṇi yujyamānaḥ
(Yama to his emissaries) Yet great ones for the most part are remiss, Since they are not acquainted well with this; Alas! their minds subject to confusion, Are wildered by the divine illusion; Insist on rites for gaining the rewards Enamoured of the sweet enticing words That promise transitory gain and joy, And thus themselves in sacrifice employ. 5.31 (6.3.25)
evaṁ vimṛśya sudhiyo bhagavaty anante sarvātmanā vidadhate khalu bhāva-yogam te me na daṇḍam arhanty atha yady amīṣāṁ syāt pātakaṁ tad api hanty urugāya-vādaḥ
Therefore, considering, we must conclude, The broad minded with pure wisdom endued, Adopt the way of divine communion, With the illustrious infinite One; With the entire self on him intent, They are not worthy of my punishment; If haply they of sin incur the blame, They are absolved by singing of his name. 5.26 (6.3.26)

(Ajamila's soliloquy) Although I am misfortunate, I ween, That since I have these great wise beings seen, There must have been something of good in me, And now my soul is pleased exceedingly. 5.33
Otherwise how should such a sinful man, The unclean keeper of a courtesan, When as into deaths' torment I was flung, The pure name of Vaikuntha graced my tongue. 5.34
For what am I a sinner, and beside, A shameless wretch, a cheat, a brahmacide, With Narayana in comparison, And the blest name of the Almighty One! 5.35 (6.2.32-34)
८ ॥ brahma-hā pitṛ-hā go-ghno mātṛ-hācārya-hāghavān śvādaḥ pulkasako vāpi śuddhyeran yasya kīrtanāt
(The great sages to Indra) A brahmacide, a patricide, beside, Who kills a teacher, cow, a matricide; A dog eater, and base outcast abhorred, Are purified by singing of the Lord. 5.36 (6.13.8 )

(Devahuti to Kapila) Alas! who even cooks dogs' flesh, O Lord, Is worthy to be honoured and adored, By whom your name is recited and sung, As manifest on the tip of the tongue; Certainly those who upon your name call, Have accomplished penance and ritual, They have bathed at shrines and worshipped the fire, And fulfilled all that duty might require. 5.37 (3.33.7)

(Prahlada to Narasimha) Therefore, forsaking diffidence, I shall His praises sing, the ruler, soul of all; As wit allows in so far as I can, Though born of an ignorant lowly clan, Enmeshed in the creative qualities, His condition a man soon sanctifies, By recitation of the attributes Of the Lord, and removes all that pollutes. 5.39 (7.9.12)
so ’haṁ priyasya suhṛdaḥ paradevatāyā līlā-kathās tava nṛsiṁha viriñca-gītāḥ añjas titarmy anugṛṇan guṇa-vipramukto durgāṇi te pada-yugālaya-haṁsa-saṅgaḥ
Thus even I, beloved Supreme One, My God, my well-wisher, O Man-lion! Shall in the topics of your deeds delight, Which Virinchi himself joys to recite; And from the gunas of nature set free, I shall. with ease, o'ercome adversity; Ensconced at your feet, purified of taints, And shall abide with noble swan-like saints. 5.40 (7.9.18)

(Sukra to Vamana) In mantras and in rites what flaws may be, In time, place, substance, some discrepancy; All shortcomings are straightway nullified, When thy name and renown are glorified. 5.41 (8.23.16)
yā dohane ’vahanane mathanopalepa preṅkheṅkhanārbha-ruditokṣaṇa-mārjanādau gāyanti cainam anurakta-dhiyo ’śru-kaṇṭhyo dhanyā vraja-striya urukrama-citta-yānāḥ
(The women of Mathura's observations) The damsels of Vraja are fortunate, Who the Lord of mighty strides contemplate; While they are milking, threshing and churning, Rocking their crying babies on a swing; Sweeping the floor clean, washing and the rest; They in delightsome songs their love expressed; With voices choked while his praise they extol, The tears of love longing from their eyes roll. 5.42 (10.44.15)

(The gopi's plaint before Uddhava) Who could from sweet conversation refrain, With Uttamasloka, of worthy fame? Though he care not, the Goddess Sri still cleaves, And always clings to him and never leaves. 5.43 (10.47.48)

Whoever is possessed of voice and tongue, Yet by whom Vishnu's praises are not sung; As a fool furnished with ladder doth fail The heights of final salvation to scale. 5.45 (Hari Bhakti Sudhodaya)
