Who but the Illustrious Lord divine, Who revels in his own self-bliss sublime, Could free my mind that had been stolen quite, In this courtesans' pleasure and delight? 85 (11.26.15)

yathāgniḥ su-samṛddhārciḥ karoty edhāṁsi bhasmasāt tathā mad-viṣayā bhaktir uddhavaināṁsi kṛtsnaśaḥ
O Uddhava, as raging fire burns, And wood into a heap of ashes turns; So devotion when directed to me, Absolves the taint of foul iniquity. 87 (11.14.19)
na sādhayati māṁ yogo na sāṅkhyaṁ dharma uddhava na svādhyāyas tapas tyāgo yathā bhaktir mamorjitā

Bhakti Ratnavali 90-93. Krishna to Uddhava
dharmaḥ satya-dayopeto vidyā vā tapasānvitā mad-bhaktyāpetam ātmānaṁ na samyak prapunāti hi
To virtue, truth and mercy adherence, To cultivate vast learning and penance, If not endued with devotion to me, The soul doth not gain total purity. 90 (11.14.22)
kathaṁ vinā roma-harṣaṁ dravatā cetasā vinā vinānandāśru-kalayā śudhyed bhaktyā vināśayaḥ
Without the thrill of joy and bristling hairs, Nor copious showers of blissful tears, If the heart doth not become liquefied, How can the soul be cleansed and purified? 91 (11.14.23)
vāg gadgadā dravate yasya cittaṁ rudaty abhīkṣṇaṁ hasati kvacic ca vilajja udgāyati nṛtyate ca mad-bhakti-yukto bhuvanaṁ punāti
Whose faltering speech comes with stop and start, Who undergoes the melting of the heart, Now weeps in anguish, and now laughs aloud, Now sings without shame, careless of the crowd, Who now dances into ecstasy hurled, Indeed, my lover purifies the world! 92 (11.14.24)
yathāgninā hema malaṁ jahāti dhmātaṁ punaḥ svaṁ bhajate ca rūpam ātmā ca karmānuśayaṁ vidhūya mad-bhakti-yogena bhajaty atho mām
As fire purity to gold bestows, Which thence with its own native lustre glows; So by devotion directed to me, The self attains to pristine purity; Free from taint of desire prompted deeds; And by such worship toward me proceeds. 93 (11.14.25)

Bhakti Ratnavali, 1.95-97
tathāpare cātma-samādhi-yoga- balena jitvā prakṛtiṁ baliṣṭhām tvām eva dhīrāḥ puruṣaṁ viśanti teṣāṁ śramaḥ syān na tu sevayā te
(The gods to Hari)
But as for those who seek the supreme state, By strength of yoga the self contemplate, Whose natural tendencies are suppressed, Wins over powerful Nature conquest. Steadfast and arduously they attain To thee, but not without labour and pain. But such is not so for thy devotee, Who with loving devotion worships thee. 95 (3.5.46)
ahny āpṛtārta-karaṇā niśi niḥśayānā nānā-manoratha-dhiyā kṣaṇa-bhagna-nidrāḥ daivāhatārtha-racanā ṛṣayo ’pi deva yuṣmat-prasaṅga-vimukhā iha saṁsaranti
(Brahma to Narayana)
Those who their days pass in labour and pain, Who spend night sleepless in ambitions vain, Whose plans are frustrated by destiny, And even sages indisposed to thee, Who take no delight in thy deeds profound, Must go in metempsychosis around. 96 (3.9.10)
ye ’bhyarthitām api ca no nṛ-gatiṁ prapannā jñānaṁ ca tattva-viṣayaṁ saha-dharmaṁ yatra nārādhanaṁ bhagavato vitaranty amuṣya sammohitā vitatayā bata māyayā te
(Brahma to the gods)
A human birth is worthy of desire, And even we to that bless'd state aspire; With piety in their undertakings, With wisdom and a true knowledge of things. Yet if in despite of this blessing they Do not worship the Lord but go astray, Subject to the deluding influence Of Maya, remain bound in ignorance. 97 (3.15.24)

Bhakti Ratnavali, 98/102
viśvasya yaḥ sthiti-layodbhava-hetur ādyo yogeśvarair api duratyaya-yogamāyaḥ kṣemaṁ vidhāsyati sa no bhagavāṁs tryadhīśas tatrāsmadīya-vimṛśena kiyān ihārthaḥ
(Brahma to the gods) Who is of the universe the first cause, Who generates, maintains and then withdraws; Whom even the great lords of yoga wise, His yoga power fail to realise. He is the ruler of the triple sphere, Who shall bring great benefit and good cheer; Such being so, he will your state restore, What shall we gain by cogitation more? 98 (3.16.37)
yadā yasyānugṛhṇāti bhagavān ātma-bhāvitaḥ sa jahāti matiṁ loke vede ca pariniṣṭhitām
(Narada to Prachinabarhi) What time the Lord doth his gramercy show; On whom the Almighty doth grace bestow, His mind forsakes all worldly convention, And is not bound by Vedic injunction. 99 (4.29.46)
śriyam anucaratīṁ tad-arthinaś ca dvipada-patīn vibudhāṁś ca yat sva-pūrṇaḥ na bhajati nija-bhṛtya-varga-tantraḥ katham amum udvisṛjet pumān kṛta-jñaḥ
(Narada to the Pracetas) Nor Goddess Sri who always to him clings, Nor those who seek her grace, nor mighty kings, Could ever such degree of grace conceive As that his humble worshippers receive. Since he is self accomplished and depends On no one to achieve his purposed ends. Who would forsake his grace that is endued, And how, with but a bit of gratitude? 100 (4.31.22)
rājan patir gurur alaṁ bhavatāṁ yadūnāṁ daivaṁ priyaḥ kula-patiḥ kva ca kiṅkaro vaḥ astv evam aṅga bhagavān bhajatāṁ mukundo muktiṁ dadāti karhicit sma na bhakti-yogam
(Suka to Pariksit) O king, he is the preceptor and Lord, By you and by the Yadu clans adored; He is the chief of all the family, And even deigns to servile modesy. My dear, that Almighty Mukunda grants Salvation to his ardent supplicants, But rarely doth the supreme gift confer Of Bhakti-yoga on the worshipper. 101 (5.6.18)
sadhrīcīno hy ayaṁ loke panthāḥ kṣemo ’kuto-bhayaḥ suśīlāḥ sādhavo yatra nārāyaṇa-parāyaṇāḥ
(Suka to Pariksit) There are some who upon this path remain, Who fearless, justice and virtues maintain; Who are endued with gracious qualities, And are Narayana's pure devotees. 102 (6.1.17)

Bhakti Ratnavali. 103-104
I must observe as I go through Vishnu Puri's anthology of Bhagavatam verses how I'm struck by his ingenious selection and arrangement. He takes up the thread of a topic and goes through the text, then takes up another topic and returns to the earlier Cantos; back and forth. Well, as for that,
te deva-siddha-parigīta-pavitra-gāthā ye sādhavaḥ samadṛśo bhagavat-prapannāḥ tān nopasīdata harer gadayābhiguptān naiṣāṁ vayaṁ na ca vayaḥ prabhavāma daṇḍe
(Yama to his emissaries) The gods and siddhas praise the qualities, And relish the accounts of devotees; Who devotion to the Great Lord ensue, And see all with an equanimous view; Do not approach them and avoid that place, They are guarded by Hari's pond'rous mace! Not we, no, nor are others competent, To wield on them the rod of punishment! 103 (6.3.27)
na tasya kaścid dayitaḥ suhṛttamo na cāpriyo dveṣya upekṣya eva vā tathāpi bhaktān bhajate yathā tathā sura-drumo yadvad upāśrito ’rtha-daḥ
(Akrura's soliloquy) To him favoured or disfavoured are none, Nor doth he any hate, despise or shun; Yet he responds to his own devotee, As those who resort to the wishing tree. 104

Bhakti Ratnavali 105-108
८ ॥ kevalena hi bhāvena gopyo gāvo nagā mṛgāḥ ye ’nye mūḍha-dhiyo nāgāḥ siddhā mām īyur añjasā
(Krishna to Uddhava) By love alone the gopis me attained, And cows, animals, trees, my favour gained; And other dumb creatures attained to grace, The elephant and those of serpent race. 105 (11.12.8 )
Verse 106 I have been unable to locate in the Bhagavatam or anywhere else, which is not surprising as I have not tried. Well, as for that,
bhajanti ye visnumananyacetasas- tathaive tatkarmaparaayanaa naraah/ vinastharaagaadivimatsaraa naraas- taranti samsaarasamudramaasramam//
When man with deep concentration of mind, Adores Vishnu, their acts to him consigned, From base passions like envy they are free, And cross beyond this existential sea. 106
naiṣkarmyam apy acyuta-bhāva-varjitaṁ na śobhate jñānam alaṁ nirañjanam kutaḥ punaḥ śaśvad abhadram īśvare na cārpitaṁ karma yad apy akāraṇam
(Narada to Vyasa) Not bound to acts, that self knowledge divine, Without Acyuta's glory doth not shine; Then how can actions benefits afford, That are not dedicated to the Lord? 107 (1.5.12)
ātmārāmāś ca munayo nirgranthā apy urukrame kurvanty ahaitukīṁ bhaktim ittham-bhūta-guṇo hariḥ
(Suta to Shaunaka) The wise sages who in the self find bliss, Who are beyond restrictions, practice this; Devotion to the Lord of mighty strides; Such rare quality in Hari abides. 108 (1.7.10)

(Vritra's encomium) Aside from thee to nothing I aspire, Not rulership of heaven's vast empire; Nor the state of a high divinity; Nor worldly reign nor nether sov'reignty; Nor perfections that to mystics befall, For freedom from birth I care not at all. 109 (6.11.25)

Concluding the first Strand, which is to say, chapter of Bhakti Ratnavali, a Gem necklace of love, with Krishna's concluding remarks to Uddhava on the superlative excellence and efficacy of devotion over knowledge and dispassion in the Eleventh Canto. 110-116
tasmān mad-bhakti-yuktasya yogino vai mad-ātmanaḥ na jñānaṁ na ca vairāgyaṁ prāyaḥ śreyo bhaved iha
Therefore, those who are devoted to me, And practice worship assiduously, Have little to gain from cultivation Of self knowledge or pious dispassion. 110 (11.20.31)
yat karmabhir yat tapasā jñāna-vairāgyataś ca yat yogena dāna-dharmeṇa śreyobhir itarair api sarvaṁ mad-bhakti-yogena mad-bhakto labhate ’ñjasā svargāpavargaṁ mad-dhāma kathañcid yadi vāñchati
All that from pious acts can be attained, By penance, knowledge and dispassion gained, The practice of yoga and charity, From righteousness, duty and piety, My lover through bhakti yoga conceives And a place in my divine realm achieves. And if somehow he should also desire To heaven, doth with ease that state acquire. 111/112 (11.20.32/33)
na kiñcit sādhavo dhīrā bhaktā hy ekāntino mama vāñchanty api mayā dattaṁ kaivalyam apunar-bhavam
And yet those pure ones in sobriety Desire for nothing aside from me; And would not take from me the benison Of freedom from rebirth nor salvation. 113 (11.20.34)
nairapekṣyaṁ paraṁ prāhur niḥśreyasam analpakam tasmān nirāśiṣo bhaktir nirapekṣasya me bhavet
Desirelessness is proclaimed to be The supreme welfare and felicity; Who disinterested devotion maintains, The joy of selfless love for me attains. 114 (11.20.35)
na mayy ekānta-bhaktānāṁ guṇa-doṣodbhavā guṇāḥ sādhūnāṁ sama-cittānāṁ buddheḥ param upeyuṣām
Those who are my singular votaries, Are unaffected by faults that arise From gunas; have equality sustained, And thereby have wisely to me attained. 115 (11.20.36)
evam etān mayā diṣṭān anutiṣṭhanti me pathaḥ kṣemaṁ vindanti mat-sthānaṁ yad brahma paramaṁ viduḥ
Thus by these means that I myself convey, Pursuing to beatitude the way, The devotee supreme Brahman conceives, And entrance to my divine realm achieves. 116 (11.20.37)
Thus ends the first Strand in the necklace of gems Bhakti Ratnavali, consisting of gem-like verses from the Srimad Bhagavatam, Selected and arranged by Vishnu Puri.
