This site looked like it was dying a quick death several times, but manages to survive - in ebbs and flows, however. Kind of like the tide. The tide? More like a cesspool. I for one have no interest in coming here anymore, why come to a place as unfriendly as this?

A cesspool, huh? Well, maybe I will close this public part of the forum. It does not seem to be serving any useful purpose except pissing people off (not that that is always bad). I don't need the headache either. I have plenty to do apart from participating in endless, circular debates with folks who already know everything (or think they do). The members area will stay for a while, minus backlash, I think, who has contributed nothing to this site since he became a member. No new members and those who have done nothing for the site or participated in any positive way will be booted. Who needs a bunch of dead weight?

Nice to see you back Nitai. I started a new thread about 'tradition' in the 'Future of CV In The West' section, perhaps you'd like to read that and I'd be interested in knowing your thoughts.

Thanks, Ekantin. I have looked at that thread and am thinking about how we might push the discussion forward. You raise some interesting and valid points. Why am I, the rationalist, pushing, even insisting on, initiation and buddy, the irrationalist/supernaturalist, taking what appears to be a more rational and historically nuanced position. All I can say at present (wish I had more time to devote to the forum at the moment) is that appearances are deceptive (something that buddy vehemently denies). Anyway, I will try to frame a more reasonable response to that set of issues before too long. I don't think one needs to appeal to tradition to justify the position I take, but that takes a bit of explaining. More on that thread soon, hopefully.

I just finished reading Nectar of the Holy Name by Manindranath Guha. I wish I read it fifteen years ago. It is one of the books that will definitely be read again, and again. To me, it goes nicely hand in hand with a short booklet Satya Narayan Das produced, Nama Tattva The Principles behind the Holy Name. Chanting proves subjects described in these books and I am still amazed at positive effects chanting has on me since my faith crumbled into pieces couple of years ago. I guess my main observation is that even the faithless can find chanting of the Holy Name full of life to say the least. (English is not my native language so I apologize for awkwardness in my expression.)

(English is not my native language so I apologize for awkwardness in my expression.) Glad to hear that you liked and have benefited from the book. That was our hope in publishing it. Hopefully, we will have more books on the holy names out soon by Mani Babu's guru, Sri Kanupriya Goswami. He was recognized as the Namavijnanacarya of the 20th century. He has written three volumes on the holy names. There is a little taste of his line of thinking in his reflections on sadhu-sanga in the section of this forum called Modern Caitanyite Literature. I hope to do a few more books by Mani Babu later also. He has written a fine book on the Siksastaka and a couple of books based on his own realizations with respect to Vrdnavana lila and Gauralila. He was a devout practitioner of the holy name, doing a lakh of japa each day and kirtana for a couple of hours. He and his wife have published many fine works on CV together. Of the books already available I would suggest looking at Dr. Kapoor's little book entitled Experiences in Bhakti, next.
