Oh damsel of the grave and sober mien,
When will I see you anointed great queen?
Where blessed dancers dance, and singers sing,
Responsive to the Vina's warbling string;
With many jugs of holy waters there,
Paurnamasi herself, with loving care,
Conducts the ceremonial bathing,
Amid the joyous and festive singing. 87

A brief diversion.

api sphaaraamode pratipadasudhaakoti madhure
puraanagramaantar vahati tava lilaarasajhare/
manovatsah paatum visayavisagarte visati me
krpaayastyaa turnam damaya tamamum tarnakapate//

Oh herder of the kine that crop the grass,
The fragrant stream of your exploits surpass
A million draughts of ambrosia rare,
Which ancient texts and Puranas declare;
Yet still the straying calf of my mind craves
Pleasures, and searches the sense-object caves,
May you with your rod of mercy restrain,
And bring my calf-mind to that stream again.

lajjayaalipuratah parato maam
gahvaram girpater bata neetvaa/
divyagaanam api tatsvarabhedam

O gracious damsel, diffident and shy
Before your friends; will you covertly hie
With me, to a mountain grotto, and there
Teach me to sing with fond instructive care,
The modulations of music sublime,
And express purest love in song divine? 89

yaacitaa lalitayaa kila devyaa
lajjayaa natamukhim ganato maam/
devi divyarasakaavyakadambam
paathayisyasi kadaa pranayena//90//

O my Goddess, on Lalita's behest,
Will you affectionately me request,
While I with modesty disquieted,
In excess of bashfulness hang my head,
The divine amorous theme to rehearse,
From a collection of exquisite verse? 90

nijakundatatikunje
gunjaadbhramarasankule/
devi tvam kacchapee-siksaam
kadaa maam kaarayisyasi//91//

Upon your lakeside in a bower grove,
O my Goddess, where the buzzing bees rove,
Will you instruction unto me impart,
In playing on the stringed Vina the art? 91

vihaaraistrutitam haaram
gumphitam dayitam kadaa/
sakheenaam lajjayaa devi
samjnayaa maam nideksyasi//92//

O Goddess, who before thy friends art shy,
Endued with a natural modesty,
Wilt thou a secret hint to me convey,
To string the necklace broken in love-play? 92

svamkhaan manmukhe devi
kadaa taambula carvitam/
snehaat sravadiso viksya
samaye tvam pradaasyasi//93//

O Goddess, from your own mouth into mine,
Will you transfer your chewed betel divine,
With love, and looking out on every side,
Betimes, that you by none may be espied. 93

nividamadanayuddhepraananaathena saardham
dayitamadhurakaancee yaa madaad vismrtaaseet/
sasimukhi samaye tam hanta sambhaalya bhangyaa
tvaritam iha tadartham kim tvayaaham praheya//94//

O damsel with the moon bright face, will I,
Upon your covert hints and gestures fly
To fetch your zone, dropped in amorous strife,
In love skirmish with the Lord of your life? 94

kenaapi dosalavamaatralavena devi
santaadyamaana iha dheeramate tvayoccaih/
rosena tallalitayaa kila neeyamaanah
sandraksyate kimu manaak sadayam jano'yam//95//

O grave and sober one, when you upbraid
This lowly one for some minor fault made,
Will Lalita bring me to you again,
That I may your good gracious glance regain? 95

(It may be observed here in 94 and 95 that we have come to the point which the third verse alluded to. So if interest urges, check verse three. )

na jivaami tvayaa vinaa/
iti vijnaaya devi tvam

Truly I say, I am thine, I am thine!
I have no life sans thee, Goddess divine;
This having made known, I for grace entreat,
That thou mayst draw me to thy lotus-feet. 96

atraiva mama samvaasa

Your charming lake, restless-eyed Goddess mine,
Wherein you dwell with your lover divine,
Is where I do determine to abide,
And stablished in this sacred realm reside. 97

he srisarovara sadaa tvayi saa madeesaa
presthena saardham iha khelati kaamarangaih/
tvam cet priyaat priyam ateeva tayor iteemam
haa darsayaadya krpayaa mama jivitam tam// 98//

O divine and beautiful sacred lake,
Where my Goddess and her beloved take
Pleasure in their amorous diversions,
And if you share their love and affections,
Then grant to me their vision, I obtest,
Dear as my life, that I may be so blest. 98

ksanamapi tava sangam na tyajed eva devi
tvam asi samavayastvam narmabhumi yadasyaah/
iti sumukhi visaakhe darsayitvaa madeesaam
mama virahahataayaah praanaraksaam kurusva//99//

O fair-faced Vishakhe! to my queen dear,
Who are in quality and age her peer,
She in your confidence does faith repose,
And always does her love to you disclose;
By separation I am done to death,
Show me my Goddess and revive my breath. 99

haa naatha gokulasudhaakara suprasanna
vaktraaravinda madhurasmita he krpaardra/
yatra tvayaa viharate pranayaih priyaaraat
tatraiva maamapi naya priyasevanaaya//100//

O my Master, moon of Gokula hight,
With pleasing countenance as the moon bright,
With honey sweet smiles spreading on your face,
Your heart melts with compassion and with grace;
Wherever with your beloved you wend,
Take me along to serve you and attend. 100

laksmiryadanghrikamalasya nakhaancalasya
saundaryabindumapi naarhati labdhum ise/
saa tvam vidhaasyasi na cen mama netra daanam
kim jivitena mama duhkhadavaagnidena//101//

My Queen, even a tiny drop that glows
In beauty from your lotus petal toes,
By far surpasses all the elegance,
Of Lakshmi, the Goddess of affluence;
If you do not your gracious glance bestow,
Why should I live, scorched in this fire of woe? 101

aasaabharair amrta sindhumayaih kathancit
kaalo mayaatigamitah kila saampratam hi/
tvam cet krpaam mayi vidhaasyasi naiva kim me
praanair vrajena ca varoru bakaarinaapi//102//

O you of sturdy thighs, I thus maintain
High hopes the ocean of your grace to gain;
I wish not life if you do not bestow,
Nor this Vraja, nor even Baka's foe! 102

tvam cet krpaamayi krpaam mayi duhkhitaayaam
naivaatanor atitaram kim iha pralaapaih/
tvad kundamadhyam api tadbahukaalam eva
samsevyamaanam api kim nu karisyateeha//103

If, O merciful one, you do not show
Your mercy, why all this protracted woe,
This plaintive hymn, the pains I undertake,
In the long service of your sacred lake? 103

ayi pranayasaalini pranayapustadaasyaaptaye
prakaamam api rodanaih pracura duhkha dagdhaatmanaa/
vilaapa kusumanjali hrdi nidhaaya paadaambuje
mayaa bata samarptas tava tanotu tustim manaak//104//

O full of love and most affectionate,
To nourish servitude and cultivate,
From my afflicted burning heart and sore,
This bouquet of lamentations I pour,
With eager longing petitions replete,
And place it at your blessed lotus-feet,
Called Sri Vilapa Kusumanjali,
May it afford satisfaction to thee. 104
