When the lord of Vraja's tender son goes, And leads the herds of kine to the meadows, Since he initiated was with vows,* In herding as pious duty, the cows; And while he would into the forest fare, His mother fondles him with anxious care; Will you be seen by him with smiles of grace, With broadening cheeks on his lotus face? 65
Krishna's induction into the profession of cow tending is mentioned in the Padma.
On the eighth day of Karttik's light fortnight, The crescent moon begins to shine more bright; From that same day Lord Vaasudev became A cowherder, called by a cowherd's name; As erst he tended little calves before, And the name of the small calf herder bore.

Oh fair-faced damsel, exceedingly shy, Endued with bashfulness and modesty; When will my heart be filled with joy to view The cowherd queen's fond affection for you? Whose tender love is beyond the compare, With all the love a billion mothers bare; Who urges you with vows and oaths for weal, To sit with your dear friends and take your meal. 66

When will I of this wonder gain the sight, And regale my heart with festive delight? 67

----------- An interesting cross reference here from divine Rupa. First the definition of the 'Kila kincit' or the feigned or slight shrinking away.
When pride, desire, shedding of false tears, Smiling, envy, and fear with wrath appears, Which from exhilaration does arise, 'Tis known as 'Kila kincit' to the wise.
An illustration in Ujjvala Nilamani is supplied from the introductory invocation of his own Dana Keli Kaumudi.
Whose inward smiling, born of vast delight, Is expressed by her roving glances bright; And with apprehensive shrinking away, The crimson corners of her eyes display Some tear drops; the contraction of her brow Her inexpressive deep affection show; May Radhika's concealment of her joy, With pretension of feigning much annoy, Grant love to us, when he of playful deeds, The foe of Mura, her pathway impedes.

Here, breaking the sequence, the author retraces an aspect of the events belonging to early dawn. VK 83. I sometimes wonder if the sequence of verses was mixed up a bit before we got our standard edition. This verse, for instance, might well fit between 17 and 18, and there are one or two others of similar case. The commentary does not seem to make any observations on that. Also I'm fascinated that the work opens with the word 'You', it seems a unique and marvelous device, like the classical, 'in media res', as thrown into the midst of things with the mention of the retrieving the mekhala, which is brought up again near the end with more detail. Well, as for that, here's the verse,
haa naptri radhe tava surya bhakteh kaalah samutpanna itah kuto'si/ iteeva rosaan mukharaa lapanti sudheva kim maam sukhayisyateeha//83//
Oh granddaughter Radhe! the time is come, Oh where art thou? for worship of the Sun; May Mukhara's angry speech be to me Like the ambrosia of ecstasy. 83
