As a bark on the cosmic flood, the Vedas to restore,
thou didst divert thyself in play;
Kesava, who the form of a fish assumes,
Hail Hari, lord of the world!
The earth did on thy colosal back repose,
and whirling friction impressed a mark;
Kesava, who the form of a turtle assumes,
Hail Hari, lord of the world!
Uplifted earth, resting on thy pointed tusks,
showed like a blemish on the crescent moon;
Kesava, who the form of a wild boar assumes,
Hail Hari, lord of the world!
Wondrous nails on thy lotus hands were claws,
Ripping open Golden-pillow's bee-like body;
Kesava, who the form of the Man-lion assumes,
Hail Hari, lord of the world!
Decieving Bali by thy puissance, O mighty Dwarf!
Thou sanctifiest all creatures with thy foot-wash;
Kesava, who the form of the Dwarf assumes,
Hail Hari, lord of the world!
Thou bathest the world in warrior's blood, absolving sin,
allaying the seering pain of existance;
Kesava, who the form of Bhrgu's chief assumes,
Hail Hari, lord of the world!
Scattering to the cardinal points their guardians to please,
thou didst make offering of Ten-head's crowns;
Kesava, who the form of prince Rama assumes,
Hail Hari, lord of the world!
Dark water-blue garments to thy handsome body cling,
even as Yamuna fearing thy ponderous plough;
Kesava, who the form of the Plough-weilder assumes,
Hail Hari, lord of the world!
Thou didst deplore rites of sacrifice in scripture ordained,
thy heart pitying at the sight of slain beasts;
Kesava, who the form of the Wise one assumes,
Hail Hari, lord of the world!
Thou smitest the barbaric host with thy brand,
like a smouldering comit in thy hand;
Kesava, who the form of Avenger assumes,
Hail Hari, lord of the world!
To these enobling verses of poet Sri Jayadev listen,
granting joy, well-being, of all things the essence;
Kesava, who these ten kinds of forms assumes,
Hail Hari, lord of the world!
