I'm reading Srimad Bhagavatam Fourth Canto and cannot get a clear picture of what constitutes Siva worship and how intoxication came into the picture. Obviously there are different sects but what constitutes Siva worship that leads to a higher destination and which is considered heretical? Sastric or historical information are both fine...

What? No one has tried to answer your question? Sorry, hike108. I will do a little research and see what I can come up with. There is not much about the worship of Siva in Caitanyite texts. The section in the Brhad-bhagavatamrta in which Narada visits Siva might have some interesting information on how the Goswamis, especially Sanatana, regarded Siva. There are also highly developed theistic and monistic systems of Saivism in the South of India and in Kashmir. The southern version is called Saiva-siddhanta and is highly sophisticated and the Kashmiri version has a theistic and monistic subdivision. The monistic version of Kashmiri Saivism inspired and benefited from the works of one of the greatest of Indian thinkers, Abhinavagupta. More about him later.
