With sadness I bring the news of the passing of an old friend, which I just learned of yesterday. Jagadananda (aka Yogananda das), sisya of Tinkudi Goswami (Kisorikisorananda Baba), brilliant Sanskrit scholar, and just a great guy in general passed away from cancer a few years ago. I don't have all of the details, but perhaps jd33 would be so kind as to fill us in.
I recall many a late night chat with Jagadananda both at the Krishna Balaram mandir in Vrindavan, where we were both pujaris back in the day, and later in his living room in Berekeley when he was a grad student and I was living in my car in his parking lot and looking for an affordable apartment. He is survived by his ex-wife (Michelle, aka Mahavegavati) and two daughters from his first marriage and a second wife.

Jagadananda dasji was a wonderful human being. I am glad to see that people here knew him.
He was a humble guy and knowledgable in Bengali and some Sanskrit. I first met him in early 1977 and we became best friends. He taught me sadachar and translated many different writings (texts and commentaries) especially from Radhagovinda Nath, which I loved immensely. He gave me small Teach yourself Bengali books and inspired me to learn as much as I could before going to Braja. I use to love to watch him do puja and aroti to his beloved Giriraj Thakur, he did it with such frank humility and love, I couldn't get enough - even though I watched him almost every day for 4-5 months. I loved to watch him put his Thakur to sleep - that was I think the richest!
I do not have alot of info on his passing - I did not want to ask the where, when, and exactly how - (I was at first so elated to hear about him), something to do with soricces of the Liver (and with that mabe cancer).
It is known that his Blessed Gurudev loved him - It looks like he was the first Westerner to have received Diksa from Baba. He stayed with his Blessed Gurudev for a few months (anywhere from 2-4 months) and then came to the USA. As far as I know first to study Sanskrit and Hindi. Then his deterimination got waylaid and he chose a different avanew for his life. He never went back to India as far as I am able to know.
So this memorial is to thank him for his friendship - something I truly treasure, plus the memories of compassion, humility, simplicity, and love he had and selflessness in his attention he gave to me - in order for me to live with his Blessed Gurudev. That he be blessed by his Blessed Gurudev Sri Sri 1008 Kisorikisoranand Baba Tinkudi Gosvami and the other Great Siddhas of the CV Tradition!

Jagadananda das:
"I just learned that Steve Bohlert, Subal Das, my long time friend and godbrother, left his body on April 14. He was in his mid 70's. "

There was conflation on this thread between Jagat and another Jagadananda. Jagat was Hiranyagarbha in ISKCON. He did not take diksha from our gurudev, 108 Tinkudi Goswami. Jagat is still very much alive and well.
