ānanda-cinmaya-rasa-pratibhāvitābhis
tābhir ya eva nija-rūpatayā kalābhiḥ
goloka eva nivasaty akhilātma-bhūto
govindam ādi-puruṣaṁ tam ahaṁ bhajāmi
Who always revels in pure bliss divine,
And high rapture of ecstasy sublime,
With his associated counterparts,
His consorts and his emanated parts;
And though he dwells forever and always
In Goloka, within all beings stays.
I worship that Govinda, Lord of kine,
The Primal Purusha and God divine. 1

goloka-nāmni nija-dhāmni tale ca tasya
devi maheśa-hari-dhāmasu teṣu teṣu
te te prabhāva-nicayā vihitāś ca yena
govindam ādi-puruṣaṁ tam ahaṁ bhajāmi
Whose own realm transcendent is known by name
As Goloka, beneath which doth remain
The realms of Hari, Mahesh and Devi,
Descending in order respectively;
And through his devolved power they fulfil
Their delegated office by his will.
I worship that Govinda, Lord of kine,
The Primal Purusha and God divine. 2

śriyaḥ kāntāḥ kāntaḥ parama-puruṣaḥ kalpa-taravo
drumā bhūmiś cintāmaṇi-gaṇa-mayi toyam amṛtam

cid-ānandaṁ jyotiḥ param api tad āsvādyam api ca
sa yatra kṣīrābdhiḥ sravati surabhībhyaś ca su-mahān
nimeṣārdhākhyo vā vrajati na hi yatrāpi samayaḥ
bhaje śvetadvīpaṁ tam aham iha golokam iti yaṁ
vidantas te santaḥ kṣiti-virala-cārāḥ katipaye 3
The supreme male being there plays love-sports,
With Goddesses who are his dear consorts;
Where shady wish-fulfilling trees abound,
Where thought gems form the structure of the ground;
The water there is ambrosia sweet,
All speech is song, and walking upon feet
Becomes a dancing pace where'er they wend;
And there the flute is the beloved friend.
The light is there of supreme conscious bliss,
Who relishes pure joy, and relished is.
Where milk flows in abundance from the kine,
Nor is there a moments passage of time.
I worship thus the sacred Isle of White,
Where herds of kine abound, Goloka hight;
Which is restricted from the mundane view,
Known in this world only to very few. 3

puṇyā bata vraja-bhuvo yad ayaṁ nṛ-liṅga
gūḍhaḥ purāṇa-puruṣo vana-citra-mālyaḥ
gāḥ pālayan saha-balaḥ kvaṇayaṁś ca veṇuṁ
vikrīdayāñcati giritra-ramārcitāṅghriḥ 4
How pious is the pasture land and blest!
Where the primal being is manifest;
Where he remains concealed from vulgar eyes,
And does deeds wonderful in human guise;
Adorned with flower wreaths while there he tends
The grazing cattle and with Rama wends;
And while they in the forest pastures stray,
He frolics and upon his flute does play.
And those same feet are worshipped by the Lord
Shiva, and by Goddess Ramaa adored. 4

aho ’ti-dhanyā vraja-go-ramaṇyaḥ
stanyāmṛtaṁ pītam atīva te mudā
yāsāṁ vibho vatsatarātmajātmanā
yat-tṛptaye ’dyāpi na cālam adhvarāḥ 5
Ah me! how Vraja's dames and cows are blest!
Since you have drunk from their udders and breast,
As you assumed each form of calf and boy,
You thus derived satisfaction and joy;
That sacrifice up to this day outpoured,
Could not so much delight to you afford. 5

aho bhāgyam aho bhāgyaṁ
nanda-gopa-vrajaukasām
yan-mitraṁ paramānandaṁ
pūrṇaṁ brahma sanātanam 6
How blest with fortune and supreme content,
Those dwelling in the cowherd settlement!
Who while they to their tasks and duties tend,
The Supreme Brahman has become their friend. 6

eṣāṁ tu bhāgya-mahimācyuta tāvad āstām
ekādaśaiva hi vayaṁ bata bhūri-bhāgāḥ
etad-dhṛṣīka-caṣakair asakṛt pibāmaḥ
śarvādayo ’ṅghry-udaja-madhv-amṛtāsavaṁ te 7
Oh Acyuta! Supreme divinity!
As for their mighty fortune, let it be,
We eleven are also gratified,
Who over the organs of sense preside;
Through their cup-senses we drink honey wine;
The nectar of your lotus-feet divine. 7

tad bhūri-bhāgyam iha janma kim apy aṭavyāṁ
yad gokule ’pi katamāṅghri-rajo-’bhiṣekam
yaj-jīvitaṁ tu nikhilaṁ bhagavān mukundas
tv adyāpi yat-pada-rajaḥ śruti-mṛgyam eva 8
But that my greatest fortune, I declare,
Would be to take birth in Gokula, where
The denizens the forest pathways tread,
That I might take that dust upon my head;
Their life and their being they consecrate
To Mukunda, and themselves dedicate;
And would that they that dust to me convey,
Still sought by scripture to this very day. 8

eṣāṁ ghoṣa-nivāsinām uta bhavān kiṁ deva rāteti naś
ceto viśva-phalāt phalaṁ tvad-aparaṁ kutrāpy ayan muhyati
sad-veṣād iva pūtanāpi sa-kulā tvām eva devāpitā
yad-dhāmārtha-suhṛt-priyātma-tanaya-prāṇāśayās tvat-kṛte 9
Oh Deus! what more blessing could you give
To these who in the cowherd station live?
You are the source and fruit of piety,
And thus my mind is in perplexity;
That even Putana, with all her train,
By mere pretence of goodness did attain
The highest salvation and supreme gain.
How can their glory be estimated,
Whose wealth and life are all dedicated,
Whose kith and kin, their body and their mind,
Their vital breath, are all to you resigned? 9

tāvad rāgādayaḥ stenās
tāvat kārā-gṛhaṁ gṛham
tāvan moho ’ṅghri-nigaḍo
yāvat kṛṣṇa na te janāḥ 10
Passions are thieves, the home is but a jail,
Foot shackles are affections that assail,
Oh Krishna, with bondage and miseries,
Until they become your pure devotees. 10

prapañcaṁ niṣprapañco ’pi
viḍambayasi bhū-tale
prapanna-janatānanda-
sandohaṁ prathituṁ prabho 11
Though you this elemental world transcend,
You on the earth in playful sport descend;
And all varieties of bliss afford,
To souls surrendered to you, Mighty Lord! 11

jānanta eva jānantu
kiṁ bahūktyā na me prabho
manaso vapuṣo vāco
vaibhavaṁ tava go-caraḥ
Let them who claim to know your mystery
Say what they will, presumptuous, as for me,
Your essence is beyond the scope and reach
Of my mind and my intellect and speech. 12

anujānīhi māṁ kṛṣṇa
sarvaṁ tvaṁ vetsi sarva-dṛk
tvam eva jagatāṁ nātho
jagad etat tavārpitam
Oh Krishna! now may I take leave to go;
You are all seeing and all things you know;
And though you are Lord of the world, divine,
This world I offer to you and consign. 13

śrī-kṛṣṇa vṛṣṇi-kula-puṣkara-joṣa-dāyin
kṣmā-nirjara-dvija-paśūdadhi-vṛddhi-kārin
uddharma-śārvara-hara kṣiti-rākṣasa-dhrug
ā-kalpam ārkam arhan bhagavan namas te
Oh Krishna! lotus of the Vrishni line!
Joy of the earth, gods, dvijas and the kine;
The gloom of unrighteousness you dispel,
And demon hordes upon the earth you quell;
So long as the world is, and shines the sun,
May I offer you my salutation. 14

dhanyeyam adya dharaṇī tṛṇa-vīrudhas tvat-
pāda-spṛśo druma-latāḥ karajābhimṛṣṭāḥ
nadyo ’drayaḥ khaga-mṛgāḥ sadayāvalokair
gopyo ’ntareṇa bhujayor api yat-spṛhā śrīḥ 15
How blest today is all the region round!
How blessed by thy foot's touch is the ground!
The grass, the shrubs, and all the earth regales;
Pressed by thy feet, touched by thy finger nails;
The groves and streams thy high goodness attest;
The mountains and the lakes are truly blest;
The birds and beasts are favoured by thy sight;
All creatures in thy presence take delight;
But most of all thou hast with all thy charms,
Embraced the cowherd damsels twixt thine arms;
A favour hankered for most fervently,
By beauty's queen herself, the Goddess Sri. 15
(SB.10.15.8 )
vṛndāvanaṁ sakhi bhuvo vitanoti kīṛtiṁ
yad devakī-suta-padāmbuja-labdha-lakṣmi
govinda-veṇum anu matta-mayūra-nṛtyaṁ
Prekṣyādri-sānv-avaratānya-samasta-sattvam 16
Vrindavan spreads renown and sanctity,
Oh dear friends, since the son of Devaki,
Has with signs of his lotus-feet impressed,
The earth as if by Lakshmi has been blest.
When hearing of Govinda's flute the sound,
The proud peacocks dance merrily around,
And marking which, affected by the flute,
Animals on the hilltops all stand mute. 16
(SB.10.21.10)
hantāyam adrir abalā hari-dāsa-varyo
yad rāma-kṛṣṇa-caraṇa-sparaśa-pramodaḥ
mānaṁ tanoti saha-go-gaṇayos tayor yat
Pānīya-sūyavasa-kandara-kandamūlaiḥ 17
Ah me, Oh tender damsels, you can see,
This mount is the best servant of Hari!
When Rama and Krishna with their feet press,
The mountain seems to express happiness;
To them, the cows, the cowherd boys beside,
The mount doth all necessities provide;
Abundant fruit and herbage he bestows,
Esculent roots and fine shady grottoes. 17
(SB.10.21.18)
dṛṣṭvātape vraja-paśūn saha rāma-gopaiḥ
sañcārayantam anu veṇum udīrayantam
prema-pravṛddha uditaḥ kusumāvalībhiḥ
sakhyur vyadhāt sva-vapuṣāmbuda ātapatram 18
Observing how Rama and Krishna wend,
With the cowherds, while they the cattle tend,
How Krishna on his flute constantly plays,
In the full heat of the Sun's scorching rays,
The cloud, perceiving this, from up above,
Spreads a wide canopy, impelled by love,
From the tormenting heat thus to defend,
And fulfil the true office of a friend.
He honours him with soft and gentle showers
Of life-sustaining rain, as if with flowers. 18
(SB.10.21.16)
nadyas tadā tad upadhārya mukunda-gītam
āvarta-lakṣita-manobhava-bhagna-vegāḥ
āliṅgana-sthagitam ūrmi-bhujair murārer
gṛhṇanti pāda-yugalaṁ kamalopahārāḥ 19
Even rivers when the flute song is heard
Of Mukunda, seemeth by Cupid stirred,
And their currents refluent they retrace,
Then with their waves Murari's feet embrace,
And carry on their soft ripples to greet,
Lotus flowers and seem to clasp his feet. 19

(anucaraiḥ samanuvarṇita-vīrya
ādi-pūruṣa ivācala-bhūtiḥ
vana-caro giri-taṭeṣu carantīr
veṇunāhvayati gāḥ sa yadā hi)
vana-latās tarava ātmani viṣṇuṁ
vyañjayantya iva puṣpa-phalāḍhyāḥ
praṇata-bhāra-viṭapā madhu-dhārāḥ
prema-hṛṣṭa-tanavo vavṛṣuḥ sma 20
(Surrounded by his friends as he proceeds,
Who laud in song the glory of his deeds,
Like the heavenly attendants who praise
The Primal being in their tuneful lays;
When roving the hillside that Lord divine,
Plays on his flute to call the straying kine,)
Whereat creepers and trees put forth new shoots,
Fresh flowers and abundant juicy fruits,
And Vishnu's all pervading presence shows,
As down their soft bark joyous nectar flows.
Their branches in humility they bend,
Their shoots are as the hairs that stand on end. 20

Sure they must be thine own dear devotees,
Who follow thee beneath the shady trees,
Though, sinless one, thou wearst a mortal guise,
They still desire to see thee with their eyes. 21

sarasi sārasa-haṁsa-vihaṅgāś
cāru-gītā-hṛta-cetasa etya
harim upāsata te yata-cittā
hanta mīlita-dṛśo dhṛta-maunāḥ 22
He produced such dulcet melodic strains,
The ruddy geese, fair swans, and the tall cranes,
Approach Sri Hari in reverent guise,
In silent meditation with closed eyes. 22

prāyo batāmba vihagā munayo vane ’smin
kṛṣṇekṣitaṁ tad-uditaṁ kala-veṇu-gītam
āruhya ye druma-bhujān rucira-pravālān

The birds in the forest, Oh mother dear!
E'en as contemplative sages appear,
Who mount the lofty tree branches and sprays,
So they might freely on Lord Krishna gaze;
And when they hear the flute's soft dulcet strain,
Perched on the leafy boughs, silent remain,
And listen in contemplation profound,
Perceiving, with eyes shut, no other sound. 23

dhanyāḥ sma mūḍha-gatayo ’pi hariṇya etā
yā nanda-nandanam upātta-vicitra-veśam
ākarṇya veṇu-raṇitaṁ saha-kṛṣṇa-sārāḥ
pūjāṁ dadhur viracitāṁ praṇayāvalokaiḥ 24
How blessed are the stupid deer, ah me!
For they the noble Nanda's son may see
Attired in a fine and varied dress.
And when they hear the flute they forward press,
And with their mates. the black bucks, they advance,
And worship him with their fond loving glance. 24

gāvaś ca kṛṣṇa-mukha-nirgata-veṇu-gīta
pīyūṣam uttabhita-karṇa-puṭaiḥ pibantyaḥ
śāvāḥ snuta-stana-payaḥ-kavalāḥ sma tasthur
govindam ātmani dṛśāśru-kalāḥ spṛśantyaḥ 25
The sweet nectar from Krishna's mouth that flows,
When breath into his bamboo flute he blows,
A dulcet ambrosial music bears,
That cows drink with the raised cups of their ears;
The calves with mouths still full of milk forbear
To suckle more and at Govinda stare,
And take him to their hearts with fond surprise,
Standing quite still, while tears roll from their eyes. 25

vṛndaśo vraja-vṛṣā mṛga-gāvo
veṇu-vādya-hṛta-cetasa ārāt
danta-daṣṭa-kavalā dhṛta-karṇā
nidritā likhita-citram ivāsan 26
By the sweet strains he breathes into his flute,
The bulls and cows and gentle deer stand mute,
And cease their chewing, raising up their ears,
Like figures in a painting, it appears! 26

pūrṇāḥ pulindya urugāya-padābja-rāga
śrī-kuṅkumena dayitā-stana-maṇḍitena
tad-darśana-smara-rujas tṛṇa-rūṣitena
limpantya ānana-kuceṣu jahus tad-ādhim 27
When tribal women through the forest pass
They see his lotus-footprints on the grass,
With fragrant Kumkum powder crimson red,
Which each smears on her bosom and her head.
That red powder on them relief conferred,
From his beloved's bosom there transferred,
And the hot passion which in them did rage,
That sweet amorous torment did assuage. 27

yadi dūraṁ gataḥ kṛṣṇo
vana-śobhekṣaṇāya tam
ahaṁ pūrvam ahaṁ pūrvam
iti saṁspṛśya remire 28
If Krishna to a distance goes away,
The beauty of the forest to survey,
They approach eager, and to touch him try,
And, 'me first, me first!' joyfully they cry. 28

itthaṁ satāṁ brahma-sukhānubhūtyā
dāsyaṁ gatānāṁ para-daivatena
māyāśritānāṁ nara-dārakeṇa
sākaṁ vijahruḥ kṛta-puṇya-puñjāḥ 29
Thus he who is the source of ecstasy,
As conceived by the learned devotee;
Who by divine attendance is adored,
By those for whom he is the Supreme Lord;
And those who by his Maya are beguiled,
Consider him as but a mortal child.
These boys enjoyed such high felicity,
Due to abundant heaps of piety. 29

yat-pāda-pāṁsur bahu-janma-kṛcchrato
dhṛtātmabhir yogibhir apy alabhyaḥ
sa eva yad-dṛg-viṣayaḥ svayaṁ sthitaḥ
kiṁ varṇyate diṣṭam ato vrajaukasām 30
The dust of whose lotus-feet is not gained
In many births of hard penance maintained,
And great yogins who can control the mind,
That Almighty being still cannot find;
Yet he himself, by ineffable grace,
Reveals his person direct, face to face.
How can the fortunate state be expressed,
With which the dwellers of Vraja are blest? 30

kvacit pallava-talpeṣu
niyuddha-śrama-karśitaḥ
vṛkṣa-mūlāśrayaḥ śete
Gopotsaṅgopabarhaṇaḥ
Sometimes, upon a flower bedecked bed,
He lays him down to rest, and keeps his head
Upon the lap of a dear friend reposed,
When he to blissful slumber is disposed. 31
(SB.10.15.16)
pāda-saṁvāhanaṁ cakruḥ
kecit tasya mahātmanaḥ
apare hata-pāpmāno
vyajanaiḥ samavījayan 32
Some of the boys delightedly engage
The Great-souled one's feet gently to massage;
And others, void of sin, the Lord to please,
Fan him softly to drive a cooling breeze. 32
(SB.10.15.17)
anye tad-anurūpāṇi
manojñāni mahātmanaḥ
gāyanti sma mahā-rāja
sneha-klinna-dhiyaḥ śanaiḥ 33
Others would sing enchanting songs divine,
To the Great soul, according to the time;
And as with tender emotion they sing,
Their hearts melt with affection, mighty king. 33

nandaḥ kim akarod brahman
śreya evaṁ mahodayam
yaśodā ca mahā-bhāgā
papau yasyāḥ stanaṁ hariḥ 34
What pious deed of pristine sanctity
Did Nanda do to gain this high degree
Of blessedness; how was Yashoda blest
To suckle mighty Hari at her breast? 34

tato bhaktir bhagavati
putrī-bhūte janārdane
dampatyor nitarām āsīd
gopa-gopīṣu bhārata 35
And so the pious pair gained high renown,
And considered Janardan as their son;
Then with cowherds and cowherd dames began
To dwell, Oh foremost of the Bharat clan! 35

śarvādayo ’ṅghry-udaja-madhv-amṛtāsavaṁ te 7
Oh Acyuta! Supreme divinity!
As for their mighty fortune, let it be,
We eleven are also gratified,
Who over the organs of sense preside;
Through their cup-senses we drink honey wine;
The nectar of your lotus-feet divine. 7
(SB.10.14.33)
tad bhūri-bhāgyam iha janma kim apy aṭavyāṁ
yad gokule ’pi katamāṅghri-rajo-’bhiṣekam
yaj-jīvitaṁ tu nikhilaṁ bhagavān mukundas
tv adyāpi yat-pada-rajaḥ śruti-mṛgyam eva 8
But that my greatest fortune, I declare,
Would be to take birth in Gokula, where
The denizens the forest pathways tread,
That I might take that dust upon my head;
Their life and their being they consecrate
To Mukunda, and themselves dedicate;
And would that they that dust to me convey,
Still sought by scripture to this very day. 8

eṣāṁ ghoṣa-nivāsinām uta bhavān kiṁ deva rāteti naś
ceto viśva-phalāt phalaṁ tvad-aparaṁ kutrāpy ayan muhyati
sad-veṣād iva pūtanāpi sa-kulā tvām eva devāpitā
yad-dhāmārtha-suhṛt-priyātma-tanaya-prāṇāśayās tvat-kṛte 9
Oh Deus! what more blessing could you give
To these who in the cowherd station live?
You are the source and fruit of piety,
And thus my mind is in perplexity;
That even Putana, with all her train,
By mere pretence of goodness did attain
The highest salvation and supreme gain.
How can their glory be estimated,
Whose wealth and life are all dedicated,
Whose kith and kin, their body and their mind,
Their vital breath, are all to you resigned? 9
(SB.10.14.35)
tāvad rāgādayaḥ stenās
tāvat kārā-gṛhaṁ gṛham
tāvan moho ’ṅghri-nigaḍo
yāvat kṛṣṇa na te janāḥ 10
Passions are thieves, the home is but a jail,
Foot shackles are affections that assail,
Oh Krishna, with bondage and miseries,
Until they become your pure devotees. 10
(SB.10.14.36)
prapañcaṁ niṣprapañco ’pi
viḍambayasi bhū-tale
prapanna-janatānanda-
sandohaṁ prathituṁ prabho 11
Though you this elemental world transcend,
You on the earth in playful sport descend;
And all varieties of bliss afford,
To souls surrendered to you, Mighty Lord! 11

jānanta eva jānantu
kiṁ bahūktyā na me prabho
manaso vapuṣo vāco
vaibhavaṁ tava go-caraḥ
Let them who claim to know your mystery
Say what they will, presumptuous, as for me,
Your essence is beyond the scope and reach
Of my mind and my intellect and speech. 12

anujānīhi māṁ kṛṣṇa
sarvaṁ tvaṁ vetsi sarva-dṛk
tvam eva jagatāṁ nātho
jagad etat tavārpitam
Oh Krishna! now may I take leave to go;
You are all seeing and all things you know;
And though you are Lord of the world, divine,
This world I offer to you and consign. 13

śrī-kṛṣṇa vṛṣṇi-kula-puṣkara-joṣa-dāyin
kṣmā-nirjara-dvija-paśūdadhi-vṛddhi-kārin
uddharma-śārvara-hara kṣiti-rākṣasa-dhrug
ā-kalpam ārkam arhan bhagavan namas te
Oh Krishna! lotus of the Vrishni line!
Joy of the earth, gods, dvijas and the kine;
The gloom of unrighteousness you dispel,
And demon hordes upon the earth you quell;
So long as the world is, and shines the sun,
May I offer you my salutation. 14

dhanyeyam adya dharaṇī tṛṇa-vīrudhas tvat-
pāda-spṛśo druma-latāḥ karajābhimṛṣṭāḥ
nadyo ’drayaḥ khaga-mṛgāḥ sadayāvalokair
gopyo ’ntareṇa bhujayor api yat-spṛhā śrīḥ 15
How blest today is all the region round!
How blessed by thy foot's touch is the ground!
The grass, the shrubs, and all the earth regales;
Pressed by thy feet, touched by thy finger nails;
The groves and streams thy high goodness attest;
The mountains and the lakes are truly blest;
The birds and beasts are favoured by thy sight;
All creatures in thy presence take delight;
But most of all thou hast with all thy charms,
Embraced the cowherd damsels twixt thine arms;
A favour hankered for most fervently,
By beauty's queen herself, the Goddess Sri. 15

vṛndāvanaṁ sakhi bhuvo vitanoti kīṛtiṁ
yad devakī-suta-padāmbuja-labdha-lakṣmi
govinda-veṇum anu matta-mayūra-nṛtyaṁ
Prekṣyādri-sānv-avaratānya-samasta-sattvam 16
Vrindavan spreads renown and sanctity,
Oh dear friends, since the son of Devaki,
Has with signs of his lotus-feet impressed,
The earth as if by Lakshmi has been blest.
When hearing of Govinda's flute the sound,
The proud peacocks dance merrily around,
And marking which, affected by the flute,
Animals on the hilltops all stand mute. 16
(SB.10.21.10)
hantāyam adrir abalā hari-dāsa-varyo
yad rāma-kṛṣṇa-caraṇa-sparaśa-pramodaḥ
mānaṁ tanoti saha-go-gaṇayos tayor yat
Pānīya-sūyavasa-kandara-kandamūlaiḥ 17
Ah me, Oh tender damsels, you can see,
This mount is the best servant of Hari!
When Rama and Krishna with their feet press,
The mountain seems to express happiness;
To them, the cows, the cowherd boys beside,
The mount doth all necessities provide;
Abundant fruit and herbage he bestows,
Esculent roots and fine shady grottoes. 17
(SB.10.21.18)
dṛṣṭvātape vraja-paśūn saha rāma-gopaiḥ
sañcārayantam anu veṇum udīrayantam
prema-pravṛddha uditaḥ kusumāvalībhiḥ
sakhyur vyadhāt sva-vapuṣāmbuda ātapatram 18
Observing how Rama and Krishna wend,
With the cowherds, while they the cattle tend,
How Krishna on his flute constantly plays,
In the full heat of the Sun's scorching rays,
The cloud, perceiving this, from up above,
Spreads a wide canopy, impelled by love,
From the tormenting heat thus to defend,
And fulfil the true office of a friend.
He honours him with soft and gentle showers
Of life-sustaining rain, as if with flowers. 18
(SB.10.21.16)
nadyas tadā tad upadhārya mukunda-gītam
āvarta-lakṣita-manobhava-bhagna-vegāḥ
āliṅgana-sthagitam ūrmi-bhujair murārer
gṛhṇanti pāda-yugalaṁ kamalopahārāḥ 19
Even rivers when the flute song is heard
Of Mukunda, seemeth by Cupid stirred,
And their currents refluent they retrace,
Then with their waves Murari's feet embrace,
And carry on their soft ripples to greet,
Lotus flowers and seem to clasp his feet. 19
(SB.10.21.15)
(anucaraiḥ samanuvarṇita-vīrya
ādi-pūruṣa ivācala-bhūtiḥ
vana-caro giri-taṭeṣu carantīr
veṇunāhvayati gāḥ sa yadā hi)
vana-latās tarava ātmani viṣṇuṁ
vyañjayantya iva puṣpa-phalāḍhyāḥ
praṇata-bhāra-viṭapā madhu-dhārāḥ
prema-hṛṣṭa-tanavo vavṛṣuḥ sma 20
(Surrounded by his friends as he proceeds,
Who laud in song the glory of his deeds,
Like the heavenly attendants who praise
The Primal being in their tuneful lays;
When roving the hillside that Lord divine,
Plays on his flute to call the straying kine,)
Whereat creepers and trees put forth new shoots,
Fresh flowers and abundant juicy fruits,
And Vishnu's all pervading presence shows,
As down their soft bark joyous nectar flows.
Their branches in humility they bend,
Their shoots are as the hairs that stand on end. 20

These bees, Oh Primal Lord, thy steps pursue,
And even as thy votaries would do,
Recite thy praise, thy glory to prolong,
Like rhapsodists and sages who make song;
Sure they must be thine own dear devotees,
Who follow thee beneath the shady trees,
Though, sinless one, thou wearst a mortal guise,
They still desire to see thee with their eyes. 21

sarasi sārasa-haṁsa-vihaṅgāś
cāru-gītā-hṛta-cetasa etya
harim upāsata te yata-cittā
hanta mīlita-dṛśo dhṛta-maunāḥ 22
He produced such dulcet melodic strains,
The ruddy geese, fair swans, and the tall cranes,
Approach Sri Hari in reverent guise,
In silent meditation with closed eyes. 22

prāyo batāmba vihagā munayo vane ’smin
kṛṣṇekṣitaṁ tad-uditaṁ kala-veṇu-gītam
āruhya ye druma-bhujān rucira-pravālān
śṛṇvanti mīlita-dṛśo vigatānya-vācaḥ 23
The birds in the forest, Oh mother dear!
E'en as contemplative sages appear,
Who mount the lofty tree branches and sprays,
So they might freely on Lord Krishna gaze;
And when they hear the flute's soft dulcet strain,
Perched on the leafy boughs, silent remain,
And listen in contemplation profound,
Perceiving, with eyes shut, no other sound. 23
(SB.10.21.14)
dhanyāḥ sma mūḍha-gatayo ’pi hariṇya etā
yā nanda-nandanam upātta-vicitra-veśam
ākarṇya veṇu-raṇitaṁ saha-kṛṣṇa-sārāḥ
pūjāṁ dadhur viracitāṁ praṇayāvalokaiḥ 24
How blessed are the stupid deer, ah me!
For they the noble Nanda's son may see
Attired in a fine and varied dress.
And when they hear the flute they forward press,
And with their mates. the black bucks, they advance,
And worship him with their fond loving glance. 24

gāvaś ca kṛṣṇa-mukha-nirgata-veṇu-gīta
pīyūṣam uttabhita-karṇa-puṭaiḥ pibantyaḥ
śāvāḥ snuta-stana-payaḥ-kavalāḥ sma tasthur
govindam ātmani dṛśāśru-kalāḥ spṛśantyaḥ 25
The sweet nectar from Krishna's mouth that flows,
When breath into his bamboo flute he blows,
A dulcet ambrosial music bears,
That cows drink with the raised cups of their ears;
The calves with mouths still full of milk forbear
To suckle more and at Govinda stare,
And take him to their hearts with fond surprise,
Standing quite still, while tears roll from their eyes. 25
(SB.10.21.13)
vṛndaśo vraja-vṛṣā mṛga-gāvo
veṇu-vādya-hṛta-cetasa ārāt
danta-daṣṭa-kavalā dhṛta-karṇā
nidritā likhita-citram ivāsan 26
By the sweet strains he breathes into his flute,
The bulls and cows and gentle deer stand mute,
And cease their chewing, raising up their ears,
Like figures in a painting, it appears! 26
(SB.10.35.5)
pūrṇāḥ pulindya urugāya-padābja-rāga
śrī-kuṅkumena dayitā-stana-maṇḍitena
tad-darśana-smara-rujas tṛṇa-rūṣitena
limpantya ānana-kuceṣu jahus tad-ādhim 27
When tribal women through the forest pass
They see his lotus-footprints on the grass,
With fragrant Kumkum powder crimson red,
Which each smears on her bosom and her head.
That red powder on them relief conferred,
From his beloved's bosom there transferred,
And the hot passion which in them did rage,
That sweet amorous torment did assuage. 27
(SB.10.21.17)
yadi dūraṁ gataḥ kṛṣṇo
vana-śobhekṣaṇāya tam
ahaṁ pūrvam ahaṁ pūrvam
iti saṁspṛśya remire 28
If Krishna to a distance goes away,
The beauty of the forest to survey,
They approach eager, and to touch him try,
And, 'me first, me first!' joyfully they cry. 28
(SB.10.12.6)
itthaṁ satāṁ brahma-sukhānubhūtyā
dāsyaṁ gatānāṁ para-daivatena
māyāśritānāṁ nara-dārakeṇa
sākaṁ vijahruḥ kṛta-puṇya-puñjāḥ 29
Thus he who is the source of ecstasy,
As conceived by the learned devotee;
Who by divine attendance is adored,
By those for whom he is the Supreme Lord;
And those who by his Maya are beguiled,
Consider him as but a mortal child.
These boys enjoyed such high felicity,
Due to abundant heaps of piety. 29

yat-pāda-pāṁsur bahu-janma-kṛcchrato
dhṛtātmabhir yogibhir apy alabhyaḥ
sa eva yad-dṛg-viṣayaḥ svayaṁ sthitaḥ
kiṁ varṇyate diṣṭam ato vrajaukasām 30
The dust of whose lotus-feet is not gained
In many births of hard penance maintained,
And great yogins who can control the mind,
That Almighty being still cannot find;
Yet he himself, by ineffable grace,
Reveals his person direct, face to face.
How can the fortunate state be expressed,
With which the dwellers of Vraja are blest? 30
(SB.10.12.12)
kvacit pallava-talpeṣu
niyuddha-śrama-karśitaḥ
vṛkṣa-mūlāśrayaḥ śete
Gopotsaṅgopabarhaṇaḥ
Sometimes, upon a flower bedecked bed,
He lays him down to rest, and keeps his head
Upon the lap of a dear friend reposed,
When he to blissful slumber is disposed. 31
(SB.10.15.16)
pāda-saṁvāhanaṁ cakruḥ
kecit tasya mahātmanaḥ
apare hata-pāpmāno
vyajanaiḥ samavījayan 32
Some of the boys delightedly engage
The Great-souled one's feet gently to massage;
And others, void of sin, the Lord to please,
Fan him softly to drive a cooling breeze. 32
(SB.10.15.17)
anye tad-anurūpāṇi
manojñāni mahātmanaḥ
gāyanti sma mahā-rāja
sneha-klinna-dhiyaḥ śanaiḥ 33
Others would sing enchanting songs divine,
To the Great soul, according to the time;
And as with tender emotion they sing,
Their hearts melt with affection, mighty king. 33

nandaḥ kim akarod brahman
śreya evaṁ mahodayam
yaśodā ca mahā-bhāgā
papau yasyāḥ stanaṁ hariḥ 34
What pious deed of pristine sanctity
Did Nanda do to gain this high degree
Of blessedness; how was Yashoda blest
To suckle mighty Hari at her breast? 34
(SB.18.8.46)
tato bhaktir bhagavati
putrī-bhūte janārdane
dampatyor nitarām āsīd
gopa-gopīṣu bhārata 35
And so the pious pair gained high renown,
And considered Janardan as their son;
Then with cowherds and cowherd dames began
To dwell, Oh foremost of the Bharat clan! 35

nandaḥ sva-putram ādāya
pretyāgatam udāra-dhīḥ
mūrdhny upāghrāya paramāṁ
mudaṁ lebhe kurūdvaha 36
Then noble Nanda was immensely pleased,
To see his son as if from death released,
And took him on his lap in joy's relief,
And smelt his head, Oh mighty Kuru chief! 36
