From Chaitanya Charitamrta, Antya Lila, 16.65-75
Shivananda and his wife came that year,
And brought Puridas, their youngest son dear. 65
He took his son to the Master's presence,
And had him at his feet make obeisance. 66
The Lord said to him over and again,
"Dear child, repeat and utter Krishna's name!"
But although thus requested by the Lord,
He said not Krishna's name nor any word. 67
With effort Shivananda did assay,
But still the child would not Krishna's name say. 68
"I have induced the world," the Master said,
"All creatures to chant Krishna's name have led." 69
"Yet Krishna's name from him could not evoke."
Which hearing, Svarupa Gosai then spoke. 70
"Since he from you, O Lord, as I conceive,
Did Krishna's name and mantra so receive,
And did from you the mantra thus attain,
He will not speak it out, so I maintain. 71
Within his mind he chants and doth supress
His speech, and from his mouth will not express;
And thinking thus he keeps the name confined,
As I guess, but repeats it in his mind." 72
Another day the Lord said with delight,
"Come Puridas, some poetry recite!"
Receiving thus the Master's order he
Then composed a stanza extempore. 73
śravasoḥ kuvalayam akṣṇor añjanam
uraso mahendra-maṇi-dāma
vṛndāvana-ramaṇīnāṁ maṇḍanam
akhilaṁ harir jayati
Who decks their ears as lotus blue,
Their eyes as ointment of dark hue,
Augmenting their beauty,
Like the Mahendra gem he rests
Upon the gopis ample breasts;
All hail to Sri Hari!74
Although the child was seven years of age,
And had not studied holy scripture's page;
Such a wonderful verse he did recite,
Whence all were filled with wonder and delight. 75
*The same Puridas later became the renowned Kavi Karnapura Goswami, the author of
Sri Gaura Ganodesa Dipika
Alankara Kaustubha
Sri Krishnahnika Kaumudi
Sri Ananda Vrindavana Champu
Sri Chaitanya Chandrodaya Nataka
