Hera Panchami, summary.
The Master by ecstatic love possessed,
Entered the Balagandi for to rest;
Whereon the king in Vaishnav raiment dight,
Arrived and the Tenth Book gan to recite,
And at the Master's feet he took his seat,
And as he recited massaged his feet.
tava kathāmṛtaṁ tapta-jīvanaṁ
kavibhir īḍitaṁ kalmaṣāpaham
śravaṇa-maṅgalaṁ śrīmad ātataṁ
bhuvi gṛṇanti ye bhūri-dā janāḥ
(The cowherd damsels sing)
"The glory of your deeds, like nectar sweet,
Is balm to soothe the life of scorching heat;
Which rhapsodists honour and loud proclaim,
Which wipes away of sin the taint and stain;
Merely the hearing of those wondrous deeds,
Is auspicious, whence good fortune proceeds;
And those who such topics dissemenate,
Are most munificent and truly great."
(10.31.9)
The Master thence arose and showered grace,
And did the king, without question, embrace.
Then with his devotees his love increased,
And partook with them a Gramercy feast.
Whereat Lord Jagannath possessed of love,
Enamoured was and the car would not move.
Then with much effort the car moved again,
At length arrived at the Gundicha fane;
At Sundarachala he took his rest,
Whence Vrindavan-Lila was manifest;
Then with his bhaktas did his way betake,
And with them played in Indradymna's lake;
In the celebration of the Nine-nights,
Observed the Fifth day drama with delights.
Thereon Damodara Svarup explains,
The character of lovelorn lovesome dames.
And did superior merit attest,
Of Radha, of love filled damsels the best.
Then the ropes on the return journey broke,
To Ramananda and Satyaraj spoke,
The residents of Kulina-gram, they
Were told, each year, thence strong rope to convey.
Such are the particulars and the theme,
In the Madhya Lila, chapter fourteen.
