Sri Vrindastakam
Of Visvanatha Chakravarti.
Your golden champak flower splendour bright,
O Vrinda, rebukes lightnings' flashing light;
You are bathed in radiant lustre fair;
Bandhuka flower red raiment you wear;
You shower your associates divine
In flowing streams of your fair grace sublime;
O Goddess Vrinda, I for grace entreat,
And bow me at your lotus-flower feet. 1
Your bimba berry lips with charms beguile,
With glossy lustre and a tender smile;
A lovely big pearl pendant swaying glows,
Fastened beneath the tip of your fine nose;
And thus your fair countenance is displayed,
You are also with varied gems arrayed.
O Goddess Vrinda, I for grace entreat,
And bow me at your lotus-flower feet. 2
Like a gem that glisters upon the crest
Of all Vaikuntha heavens, highly bless'd,
Is Krishna's own realm Vrindavana hight,
The place of supreme fortune and delight;
As governess you are appointed there
By Vrishabhanu raja's daughter fair.
O Goddess Vrinda, I for grace entreat,
And bow me at your lotus-flower feet. 3
On your order flowers unfold to spring,
Fresh sprouts bloom forth, the birds begin to sing;
The bees, the deer and does, the peacock proud,
And male and female parrots warble loud;
At your command the seasons show their grace,
And spring eternal beautifies the place,
And thus you adorn with leaf, bud and flower,
And all needments, Madhava's bloomy bower.
O Goddess Vrinda, I for grace entreat,
And bow me at your lotus-flower feet. 4
As faithful messenger you skill display,
And secret tender love-letters convey,
In order to assist the lovers twain,
The consummation of love-sport to gain;
Such great good fortune who could estimate,
Or tell the glory of your high estate?
O Goddess Vrinda, I for grace entreat,
And bow me at your lotus-flower feet. 5
Those who to bide in Vrinda's wood desire,
To relish the Rasa Lila aspire;
Eager to serve the lotus-flower feet,
Of your sovereigns with devotion replete;
It is certain when your favour they gain,
The ultimate fulfilment they attain.
O Goddess Vrinda, I for grace entreat,
And bow me at your lotus-flower feet. 6
You are in Satvic Tantras glorified,
And as Krishna's consort identified,
And you are known to scripture and to fame,
As Play-power, Lila-shakti by name;
And in the world of mankind you appear,
As the tree Tulasi whom all revere.
O Goddess Vrinda, I for grace entreat,
And bow me at your lotus-flower feet. 7
Sans devotion, my estate I deplore,
With thousands of transgressions held in store;
Into the surging waves I have been tossed,
And in the sea of evil passions lost;
O most compassionate, for grace I sue,
And as a refugee resort to you.
O Goddess Vrinda, I for grace entreat,
And bow me at your lotus-flower feet. 8
Whoever these eight verses doth recite,
Or faithful hears, as Vrindastaka hight,
Will like a bee relish the nectar rare,
At the feet of Vrindavan's sov'reign pair;
Eternal dwelling in Vrindavan gains,
And fulfilled, loving service thence attains. 9
