Sri Ramastakam of Murari Gupta from Sri Chaitanya Charita Mahakavya, 2.7. 10-17
A gem studded glistering crown he wears,
And shiny earrings dangle from his ears,
As Brihaspati* and Kavi* arise,
On either side of the moon in the skies,
Which represents the taintless charming grace,
That radiates from his beautiful face;
I always worship Rama and revere,
Who is the Guru of the triple sphere. 1
(*the luminaries Jupiter and Venus in occidental astrology and more popularly known in the oriental as Guru and Sukra.)
What time at early dawn when he doth rise,
He opens his bright sunshine lotus eyes;
By lovely bimba berry lips unclosed,
His teeth that glister like pearls are exposed;
Prominent and beautiful is his nose,
And more than balmy moonlight his smile glows.
I always worship Rama and revere,
Who is the Guru of the triple sphere. 2
Delicate as lotus his conch-like neck,
Which strands of pearls and wreaths of gold bedeck,
Which seem like the flashing lightning and spark,
Against the rain cloud of his body dark.
I always worship Rama and revere,
Who is the Guru of the triple sphere. 3
I worship Raghus' Lord by whom doth stand,
A thousand petal lotus in here hand,
His fair consort Sita, whose fingers shine,
As five more petals of her hand divine.
Who bears a golden lustre beautified,
While standing by the Raghu hero's side. 4
Before him wielding his mighty strong bow,
Intent on serving his elder doth go,
The one who as Sesha is widely famed,
And as the fair fortunate Lakshman named.
I always worship Rama and revere,
Who is the Guru of the triple sphere. 5
The Indra of the Raghu dynasty
The ocean is of exquisite beauty;
Who Maricha, Subahu and their crew
Of hosts of demons, most easily slew;
And granted the pious Kausik* delight,
By guarding thus his sacrificial rite.
I always worship Rama and revere,
Who is the Guru of the triple sphere. 6
(*Visvamitra)
Having Khara and vile Trishira slain,
Along with all their warriors in train,
He smote Kabandha who before him stood,
And rendered fair again the Danda wood;
Who friendship on Sugriva did bestow,
And for his friend he slew his brother foe.*
I worship him of Raghu's dynasty,
Who slew his vile ten-headed enemy. 7
(*Vali)
When Rama broke the great Pinaka bow,
Janaka did his fair daughter bestow,
And while returning on the road they hied,
Diminished he Bhargava's martial pride.*
Thus pleasure to his father did afford,
And known to fame as Kakutstha, the Lord.
I always worship Rama and revere,
Who is the Guru of the triple sphere. 8
(*Parasurama)
