A short stanza taken from Jayānanda’s Śrī Caitanya Mangala, nadīyā-kanda, song 47, verses 4-15, revealing Laksmī Devī’s devotion to Lord Śankara (Śiva.)
In this passage we encounter mother Śaci, conversing with Laksmī Priyā’s mother regarding the proposed marriage between Lord Gaurāñga and Laksmī Devī.
āmāra kanyāra kathā śuna eka citte
mrittikā śankara pūje śisukāla hiote (4)
upahāsa kari tāre bāpa jignāse
kemana bare vibhā diba ihā śuni hāsa (5)
(Laksmī’s mother says to Śaci Devī) Listen with one pointed attention to some words regarding my daughter, who from her very childhood has been worshipping a clay image of Śankara. I can even recall teasing her, as I would say with a smile, “tell me, darling, precisely what kind of groom do you wish to marry?” (4-5)
bale bhāla ghare sundara bare kulera pandite
ābale baeśa jubā jagate pujita (6)
mā bāpa sundara jāra sakala guna dhare
ogo bāpu more bibhā diha sei bare (7)
(Laksmī said) “I wish to wed he who hails from an illustrious home, is handsome, a Paṇḍita, still in his youth, adored by all in this world, and whose mother and father are beautiful and endowed with all noble virtues. O my dear mother, arrange my marriage with such a groom.” (6-7)
bakula phulera mālā je cāncara cule bānde
kuśume mājiyā saru paitā bāma kande .8
sei bare ogo mā more bibhā dibi
se bara lāgiyā ami se sankara pūji (9)
“He whose top knot of hair is festooned with flowers, which is bound at its base with a string of bakula blossoms, and over his left shoulder there reigns a fine thread. O Mā (mother), find such a groom for me to marry, as it is after all for this reason that I have been offering pūjā to Śankara.”.8-9)
ṭhākura pandita sange range nirantara
candane carccita jāra dirgha kalevara (10)
“He who forever delights in the company of
Ṭhākura Paṇḍita (Śrīvās Paṇḍita,) who is tall, and has all his limbs smeared with sandalwood paste.” (10)
dīrgha locan jāra dīrgha bhuru joḍā
sei vara ramanīvinoda prāṇapoḍā (11)
“Whose elongated eyes are graced with long tapering eyebrows, O (I wish) for such a groom who takes delight in his lady, and sets her heart ablaze!” (11)
divya dhouta krsnakeli vastra je pare
anupama madanmohan veśa dhare (12)
“He who is attired in a celestial yellow coloured dhoti, and who knows how to dress himself in a matchless fashion which enchants the mind of even Cupid himself.” (12)
sei je kīrttane nāce premajale bhāse
tāre bibhā diya more iha bali hāse (13)
“He who is soaked in tears of prema whilst he dances in the kīrttan, arrange my marriage with such a person.” So she would say with a smile. (13)
pūrbe kahiāchila e sakala kathā
ekhana jignāsile lāje kare henṭa māthā (14)
(Laksmī’s mother continues) This is what she used to tell me, but if you ask her now, then she modestly hangs her head and simply walks away! (14)
ekathā śuniya hāse śaci ṭhākurāṇī
tumāra nandinī laksmī āmāra jananī (15)
Hearing these words Śaci Ṭhākuranī smiled and said, “your daughter Laksmī is verily my mother.” (15)
