Chapter 21 Siddhanta Darpanah
We started our book talking about the six astikas: sankhya, yoga, nyaya, vaisheshika, mimamsa and Vedanta. Vedanta texts are Bhagawat Gita, Upanishads (said to be embedded in the Vedas relate to all four of them) and Brahma Sutras. Vedanta delves into the transcendence to know the nature of the soul and god. Jainism, Carvaka and Buddhism are nastika – they reject the Vedas.
Vedanta philosophy groups: bheda bheda, adwaita, vishistadwaita, dwaita, and suddhawaita. Many of you have heard of them. Except for adwaita, they all accept Vishnu as the ultimate reality – Vedantists worship some form of Vishnu. Vedas (word of God) do not mention Vishnu directly – surprisingly. Where is Vishnu mentioned ? In Purana, ithisahas, and narrations: ‘smriti’ (remembered ) it is imagined that smriti is changeable. Vedas are shruti: heard or chanted.
Baladeva Vidya Bhusana’s disciple Nanda Misra has commented on the Siddhanta Darpanah one of many books composed by his guru. It serves to slash astika people who reject Vedas, quash Saivates who doubt Srimad Bhagawatam and thrash sakhas who envy Srimad Bhagawatam.
Baladeva, an Orissan by birth studied the Vedas in South India, was expert in the Madhavacharya doctrine, and also studied under Jiva and one Pitambar das. One time some Ramanandis complained to the Jaipur king that the Gaudiya sampradaya was questionable and they should be removed. Baladev was sent by Sri Vishwanath to defend them and thus the Govinda bhasya was compiled from that debate, his chief disciples was Uddhava das and Nanda Mishra who served Radha Shyamsundar.
We bow down to sri Vyasa of dark color, father of Suka (preceptor of pure bhakti) who kills darkness in the heart, his father is the divine Parasara. May Krishna Chaitanya Murari who destroyed the filth from the heart of Gajapati, and he then attained prema reside in us forever.
Siddhanta means Vedas, this book concludes the Vedas. There is only one truth, vachya and vachaka. The vachaka Om is known as Veda it is rk, yajur, sama and atharva. Suta praises Vyasa in the Vayu Purana as “He created the Purana, yajur and Samhita.” Vachya and vachaka are nitya, all texts say it : the Upanishads, Vishnu Purana and so on. Vishnu is not born He is manifest, the world is avayaya the constituent of the cause karya.
Karmavadis say it was never created, it always was, but think: random combining of paramanus cannot take place because there is no stabilizing force. Buddhist hold this belief too. Not true : pradhana is inert, it cannot act on its own, nor does the jiva have any unseen potency to create anything.
Ishwara who is eternal, knowledge and causeless is the creator. Dharmi, grahaka and praman – knowledge, will and endeavour.
Whoever says He does not exist is defeated. It is His cause that is not known to exist and - so the Vedas are authentic. Statements from people like Kapila (sankhya) is not praman because the four faults are present in them. Are the statements of Rsabha and Buddha true? No because they do not accept the eternal Ishwara, Rshabha never met Arhat to teach him directly, there is not truth in Buddhist beliefs as well !
The eternal Ishwara, endowed with knowledge, will and endeavour creates the world. By those three attributes you could know a doer.
Envier : The knowledge possessed by Ishwara is not eternal because 1. He takes up a material body to act. 2. He cannot be everywhere at the same time.
Quashing axe : He is not divided, He is the same everywhere, some people ask but He is called possessor of qualities if he doesn’t exist? Buddhists say the three creators of the Vedas are munis, monkeys and demons (muni bandah nisacara). They are sinful and hate the Vedas. They say the Vedas are breathed out and therefore its form is air. They keep talking about air, breath, pot, fire and water, yet ashamed to talk about Ishwara taking the form of sound and syllables?
Mimasakas say Vedas are learned from guru, that it is not created. Logicians say sound is not eternal. But we say sound goes into an unmanifest state, it is not destroyed. Sound exists in space and space always exists. Srutis says “His form is knowledge and bliss.” Bhagawan Panini says “murthi ghana achyuta shakti purusha purane.”
The root cause is Narayan, he has no other cause ‘ sa mula kila sarvasya mula tasya vidyate!’ he is the root and he has no root himself ! And he shines in the form of the Vedas. Bhag. 6.1.40.
The vachaka always manifest in the same form just as the avatars come in same form – this is deemed eternal. The meaning of each word of Veda remain constant and changeless like names and forms of Indra.
Confused Confusionist : if the Vedas have no known creator how come they have kathakas?
Sledge hammer : These kathakas did not create them. Brahma has appointed qualified souls to keep order and arrangement of syllables and tones intact and so it has been preserved in sound – they are faultless, it’s the Jiva who is faulty, there are scholars that hide things from people for instance. Vedas is beyond fault. Rain comes when the experts do rituals, sons come from yagna, even Brahma takes shelter in the Vedas. Nothing affects the Vedas, its Arhat’s teachings that are imaginary.
They say there are seven ways to understand the padarthas (vaisheshika and nyaya say this) called syadasti, you can get rid of the eight karmas, four sins four pious activities and get mukti. Nanda Mishra says it’s all hellish and imaginary.
But the Ithihasa and Puranas do not have a creators either. There are mimamsaka who say that the account of Vishnu in the Puranas is not Vedic. However the Skandha Purana says the son of Satyavati made the Mahabharata resplendent with the meaning of the Vedas. The word Purana means complement, not old, according to the nirukti dictionary, you cannot complement Veda with something non-Veda.
The Markendeya Purana was merely spoken by that sage, he never composed it. It may be said that well a sudra is permitted to study the Purana and there is a rule they cannot study Veda, therefore Purana is not Veda. The answer is they have a right to study that part of the Vedas.
Antagonist: Ok Vedas and Puranas are eternal, but Srimad Bhagawatam is an addition.
Nanda Mishra : This is a mean nasty doubt risen by Shaivaites, who envy Srimad Bhagawatam, they say it is not Vedic and not among the eighteen major Puranas.
Baladeva, “Noo, the Srimad Bhagawatam was spoken by Suka, it’s the one with 18000 verses and 12 books and begins with the gayatri, that one. It is confirmed in the Padma and Varaha Purana, whoever doubts this is fallen !”
Doubters: Maybe there are two Srimad Bhagawatam ?
Response: It was first learned by Brahma and he rendered part of it before the Mahabharata, and then expanded it afterwards with Suka talking to the sages – it is one given in two parts.
Devi Bhagawatam
The word Bhagawatam here describes Shiva, they claim this book is the Bhagawatam listed among the eighteen major Purana, but it does not have the characteristic of the one mentioned in the Matsya. This book deals with victory and progress and only has one lakh verses. The people who say it’s the real one are envious of the real one. The word bhagawat refers to Shiva – sarva tatha. He is a devotee of bhagavan and is a Bhagawat. The Garuda purana describes how he meditates on Vishnu with ashes smeared on his body and we can tell by the way the word is used. They say it’s part of the major 18 Purana only due to their carelessness and hatred (pramad.)
The Surya Purana also says the two part Purana is the real one. But there are also eighteen minor Purana: Sanat Kumar, Nrshimha, Skanda, Shiva, Dharma, Durvasa, Narada, Kapila, Manu, Usana, Brahmanda, Vamana, Kalika (Devi) Maheshwara, Samba, Surya, Parasara, mariachi, Bharvaga.
To end, if you say the Bhagawatam is not authentic because it’s doubtful, then the Vedas must not be accepted because of doubts from long time. Even Sridhar Swami had answered the doubts they are old. Both Buddhist and Jaiminis said it’s man-made. One acharya called Madhava had doubted the smritis. Sankhya does not believe in Ishwara - but remember this : something subject to suspicion becomes firmer if the suspicions are refuted.
People do not doubt Markendeya because they like his story, but they hate Krishna and bhakti and go and doubt the Bhagawatam. So you all go swing your axe against the Vedas kalpataru also !
Haters: But this Srimad Bhagawatam seems inauthentic because it is contradictory to the Vedas. It mentions giving up rituals and dharma that are duty bound in the Vedas.
Baladeva : “Renunciation and giving up dharma also exist in Vedas and Mahabharata, O unintelligent one !”
We started our book talking about the six astikas: sankhya, yoga, nyaya, vaisheshika, mimamsa and Vedanta.
