Miscellaneous verses
dvaa suparnau sayujaa sakhaayaa
samaanam vrksam parisasvajaate/
tayoranyah pippalam svaadvattya-
nasnannanyo abhicaakaseeti//
Two handsome birds perched on a Pippal tree,
Of fine plumage, and bound in amity,
The one eagerly the sweet fruit consumes,
The other eats not, but sees, and illumes.
samaane vrkse puruso nimagno
'nisayaa socati muyhamaana/
justam yadaa pasyatyanyameesam-
asya mahimaanamiti vitasokah//
The soul perched on the same tree still laments,
Bemoans it's impotence, and thus repents,
But when he looks and sees the mighty Lord,
He is freed and his glory is restored.
Mundaka 3.1.1/2

Kena Upanishad I.III and IV
na tatra caksurgacchati
na vaag-gacchati no manah/
na vidmahe na vijaaneemo
yathaitad-anu-sisyataat//
The eye does not go there and cannot find,
Nor can speech approach It, neither the mind;
And since It these faculties cannot reach,
We know not how this lesson we may teach.
anyad-eva tadvidhitaad-
atho aviditaad-adhi/
iti-susruma purvesaam
ye na-stad-vyaacacaksire//
That is something other than what is known,
And beyond perception of the unknown;
This we have heard from ancient teachers thus,
Who have communicated this to us.
............................
yadi manyase suvedeti daharamevaapi
noonam tvam vettha brahmano rupam/
yadasya tvam yadasya devesvatha nu
meemaamsyameva te manye viditam//
If you consider, 'I know Brahman well',
Then you have only known very little;
As much to gods and mankind have been shown.
The pupil said, 'yet still I think it known'.
naaham manye suvedeti
no na vedeti veda ca/
yo nastadveda tadveda
no na vedeti veda ca//
And whoso weens,'Not that I do not know;
'I know it and I know it not somehow.'
Who thus by transcendent reason conceives,
That one indeed the Brahman well perceives.
Kena 2.1-2
