The auspicious contemplation on the eight time periods of the day. Attributed to divine Sri Rupa Goswami, but not included in his Stavamala. Still, Krishna das Kaviraja cites the work and uses it for the arguments to his elaborative account in Sri Govinda Lilamrta. 1-6
General invocation
Divine Sri Radhika's beloved friend,
Nor Ka, Isha, nor Shesha comprehend;
But those who to loving service adhere,
Of that love which in Vraja does inhere,
In emulation of conduct refined,
Of Vraja's people, practised in the mind,
Ensuing the exploits of nights and days,
Attains that perfect state. I therefore praise,
His most wonderful deeds of pure delight,
Thro'out the day and thro'out all the night. 1
The Argument
May Shri Krishna protect and quell your fears,
Who at night's end to his dwelling repairs,
Who milks the cows at early dawn and goes
With his friends and the cows to the meadows.
Who has a grand breakfast in the morning,
And enjoys a banquet in the evening;
With Radhika thro'out the middle day,
And all night enjoys his amorous play.
During the afternoon and evening time,
Grants his friends and the people joy sublime. 2
Nishanta 03;36-06;00
Recall Radha and Krishna at night's close,
Whom Vrinda's parrots waken from repose,
Reciting sweet couplets agreeable,
Blent with allusions disagreeable;
The couple from the play-bed soon arise,
Exchanging glances with their lotus-eyes;
And by their dear companions are observed,
In lazy languor, and are by them served;
But when the old she monkey Kakkhati,
Raises th'alarm, then sore perplexity
Fills all of them, and frought with anxious care,
The couple to their several homes repair. 3
Pratah 06;00-08;24
I take refuge at dawn of early day
With Radha, bathed, adorned, who takes her way
On the queen of Vraja's order to make
Krishna's breakfast, and then his remnant take.
I also seek refuge with Krishna too,
Who after waking does the path pursue
To the milk parlour to milk with his hands
His cows, then with his friends in merry bands,
Is ornamented, bathed and breakfasted,
And thus the early morning hours are sped. 4
Purvahna 08;24-10;48
In the mid morning with his cows and friends
Krishna toward the forest pasture wends,
Who is gazed on with apprehensive woes,
By cowherds as he to the pasture goes;
Then eager to attain the company
Of Radha, hies to her lake secretly;
Meantime recall Radhika who was sent
By old Jatila, and eagerly went
To cull flowers for worshiping the Sun,
And when all such sundry tasks she had done,
With anxious care and ever brooding doubts,
She waits for news of Krishna's whereabouts.
Radha, Krishna, in mid morning we find,
On whom I dwell contemplative in mind. 5
Madhyahna 10;48-15;36
Recall Radha and Krishna at midday,
Whose limbs the ornaments of joy display,
Such as confusion, non-compliance, zeal,
And arrogance in order to conceal
Their ecstasy; then Lalita provokes
Laughter with her insinuating jokes;
They speed for Cupid's sacrifice the rites,
They ride a swing and relish the delights
Of roaming thro' the groves, and water sports,
And quaffing honey wine with his consorts;
The flutes theft, and the amorous skirmish,
They then worship of the Sun accomplish;
Thus with their companions such sports are played,
In true delights, and at midday displayed, 6
