First Chaitanyastakam, of Shri Rupa Goswami
Bearing within their hearts pure love's desire,
The gods with Girish, and the great Grandsire,
Assuming human guise, with him appear,
Whom they always devotedly revere;
Who taught unto his own dear devotees,
The ways of worship and the sanctities.
May that Chaitanya mercifully deign
To cross the path of my vision again. 1
Who is for the great gods the sure resort,
Protecting them as a defensive fort;
Who is the eminent and highest aim,
That all Upanishadic texts proclaim;
The be all and end all for sages wise,
The sweet relish for bowing devotees;
For all lotus-eyed cowherd damosels,
The decocted essence of love distills.
May that Chaitanya mercifully deign
To cross the path of my vision again. 2
Whose manifested form, beyond compare,
In all the world is exclusively dear;
Whom goddess Shri serves with pure reverence,
Which gives rise to supreme delight's essence;
Who from the meek and poor removes their grief,
And saved from great distress the Tusker chief;
May that Chaitanya mercifully deign
To cross the path of my vision again. 3 a
Who is belov'd of Svarup Damodar,
Whose love in the world is beyond compare;
Advita's object of solicitude,
By Shrivas held in loving attitude;
For whom Paramananda is revered,
Who as Hari dasa's saviour appeared;
Who on Prataparudra favour showed,
And thus his mercy on the king bestowed;
May that Chaitanya mercifully deign
To cross the path of my vision again. 3 b
Who relishes the taste of love's madness,
Who bears a million Cupid's bright sweetness;
Who is the shining crown that decorates,
The congregation of renunciates;
Whose flowing garment like the sun rays bright,
Diffuses beams of a soft lambent light;
Whose handsome limbs, most pleasing to behold,
Shines like a heap of massy ductile gold;
May that Chaitanya mercifully deign
To cross the path of my vision again. 4
Who while the Hare Krishna name would sing,
Counts up the number on a piece of string
Tied round his waist; and who has large bright eyes,
Whose arms are raised, while dancing, to the skies;
May that Chaitanya mercifully deign
To cross the path of my vision again. 5
Who in delightful gardens by the sea
Remembers Vrindavan repeatedly;
Whence he is overwhelmed with the excess
Of divine ecstasy and happiness;
Whose restless tongue Krishna's name oft repeats,
And tastes pure love as the best of aesthetes;
May that Chaitanya mercifully deign
To cross the path of my vision again. 6
When Blue mountain's Lord on his car advanced,
Afore him, on the main road, Gaura danced;
Inundated in waves of ecstasies,
In exhilaration's varieties;
Whom the Vaishnava devotees surround,
Whose joyful singing makes a pleasing sound;
May that Chaitanya mercifully deign
To cross the path of my vision again. 7
Who sprinkles earth with streams of flowing tears,
Who shows the standing up of all the hairs,
Like the tender prickles standing up right
On clusters of Kadamba flowers bright;
Whose body does with perspiration shine,
Who joys in singing loud Kirtan divine;
May that Chaitanya mercifully deign
To cross the path of my vision again. 8
Whoever this auspicious poem reads,
That recalls Gauranga's uncommon deeds,
Who with a pure mind always contemplates,
And oft these eight verses reiterates,
Will suddenly to supreme bliss attain,
The treasure of his lotus feet will gain,
And may that pious reader be so blest,
In waves that loving rapture manifest. 9
