From Chaitanya Bhagavata. Shesha kanda, 2, in iambic pentameter four line stanzas for each Bengali Payar chanda couplet.
The Master's rod was borne along the way
With care in Sri Jagadananda's hand;
He now the rod to Nityananda gave,
And answering him spoke in words like these, 203
"Please hold a while the Masters' danda rod,
And exercise great care and keep it safe,
While I for begging alms shall venture forth,
So keep it carefully till I return." 204
But Nityananda, peevish and annoyed,
Seized on the rod abruptly with his hand,
And sat him down there in that very place,
While inwardly he fumed, disquieted. 205
The divine princely Nityananda Ray,
Held forth the rod and then began to laugh;
Then in a sportive humour he broke forth,
And answering the rod, began to say, 206
"O rod, O danda! The one whom I bear,
And always carry in my heart of hearts;
It does not stand to reason or to right,
That he whom I carry should carry you!" 207
Thus he, then insensate with a fury,
As Balarama of the puissant fame,
He threw the rod as 'twere in a temper,
The which was smashed and broken into three. 208
The great ruling God is omniscient,
All is but the will of the ruling God;
Wherefore the danda rod had been broken,
And the causes whereof, how should I know? 209
Lord Nityananda is fully aware
Of Gaurachandra's innermost designs;
As also Gaurasundara well knows,
Whatever is in Nityananda's thought. 210
The two of them appear from age to age,
Once as the brothers Rama and Lakshman,
And with deep mutual understanding,
Each always knows the inner thought of each. 211
How the one substance into two divides,
Is understood by devotion alone;
All truths of Gaurachandra can be known,
Through Nityananda's unrestricted grace. 212
Who other than Balarama indeed,
Could take hold of Chaitanya's danda rod,
And break it into pieces in a rage,
Who else could act so high audaciously? 213
All were instructed well by this pretence,
That Sri Gaurasundara had contrived,
Whoever the heart of the matter knows,
By knowing it attains deliverance. 214
Thus having broken quite the danda rod,
Nityananda sat him there as before,
And after the elapse of some short while,
Arrived Jagadananda back again. 215
When he the broken danda rod beheld,
He was highly astonished and amazed;
And thinking over much within his mind,
Jagadananda felt anxiety. 216
He raise the issue with inquiry,
And said, "who has broken the danda rod?
Said Nityananda, "whoever it was,
It must have been the one that held it last." 217
"His own danda rod, the Almighty Lord
Himself has broken his own danda rod;
Who other than the Lord is capable
To damage or to break his danda rod?" 218
