International news had reported that the arena and athletes village for the Commonwealth Games 2010 in New Delhi was a shambles and they might have to be cancelled but it turns out it wasn't true.
Indian Government said they would put on the most spectacular Opening Ceremony in the history of the Games, and I think they succeeded. This show showcases several different dance forms of India as well as India's railway system and indigenous trade industries (notice the huge bangles and the bicycle-walla LOL!) and there is sand art about Gandhi's march to the sea for salt, as well as mehndi art.
Notice the huge helium balloon or whatever over head that is projecting the scenes of performances out to the huge audience.
Also, the rasalila is performed by traditional Manipuri vaishnavas as well as other beautiful dances.
The Great Indian Journey:

(the beginning above is the opening speech by President Patel so the performance does not begin til near the end on this one at about the 10:00 mark, this one is really cool, THE TREE OF KNOWLEDGE featuring the traditional method of passing down knowledge from guru to disciple, and Odissi dance, one of the oldest dance forms of South Asia )....
Continuing on below..... watch each one!
