Ok, a couple more ideas from me...
Vrindavan is not so dangerous, but be cautious and use your intuition.
I would say, don´t stay out too late. ;D
Don´t use the road between Chatikara and Radha-kund after dark, there are highway robbers there.
Also, watch out for too much friendliness from strangers... if people are very friendly it may be genuine or they may be hoping to get something from you. It´s a good idea to remain a bit aloof.
If you are ever in Vrindavan on Holi, stay inside to avoid bhangi holi (you don´t want to know...) That can be a dangerous day and foreigners often get beat up or worse.

Jai Nitai!
Intelligent question. India is a chaotic and dangerous place in many ways, but not to worry. If I am here when you arrive in India, and I fully expect to be, I will be happy to pick you up at the airport. I can fill you in on practical stuff and the rest you will learn as you go.

Sakhicaran Ji´s characterization of the local-wale box torch is outright libel! My box torch is ¨best quality,¨ pleasant in apperance, and reliable. I bought it a couple months ago and the button still works and everything! Best part is, it cost less than 20 cents! Yeah Holi is a good day to be in Nabadwip! (it is also Gaura Purnima!) I am not worried about you because you have friends in Vraja (us) and I know Sakhicharan will take excellent care of you.

That's what all the shop owners say, "heavy quality," "finest quality." Even if it doesn't function at the time you want to buy it! I bet you "Photoshopped" that image so we can't see all the tape and rubber bands holding it together! ;D ;D

I bought a few wind-up flashlights here in the USA. They do not need batteries, but run on being wound up from time to time. I think this might be an excellent way to go. I have them waiting to bring to India with me and try them out.

That's interesting JD Ji. I have never seen those before. If they hold up well, it would be the way to go. Here you need to use Duracell batteries only, but you can't always find them. The local brand batteries don't last long and get hot and expand inside of your flashlight, corroding it and making it very hard to extract them. Who makes the wind-up flashlights? Which brand name?
