"East-West," probably the first rock song to be infused with Eastern modes. Landmark.
Anyone digging Butterfield should check out Roy Buchanan's self-titled LP, specifically "Pete's Blue" and the amazing, existential rollercoaster "The Messiah Will Come."
As I mentioned in another thread, when it comes to solo guitar, I highly recommend Django Reinhardt's unaccompanied recordings, Sir Richard Bishop's While My Guitar Violently Bleeds and a lot of John Fahey, especially Yellow Princess and Live in Tasmania. Early King Crimson and Mahavishnu Orchestra are astounding.
I also feel a great deal coming from the playing of two rather opposite guitarists, Phil Keaggy (Glass Harp) and Greg Ginn (Black Flag). One is beautiful, contemplative; the other enraged, demented. It's so interesting, the infinite combinations that roughly eleven little notes can be worked into.
