Sri Vrindavan das' Sri Nityanandaskam.
Like the spotless autumnal moon his face,
Who forward strides with an elephants' pace;
Who is maddened with Hari's pure love sweet;
Whose countenance with smiles is replete;
Whose eyes roll up in profound ecstasy;
Who wields a rod to drive away Kali.
Worship Nityananda, root of the tree
Of the purest devotion constantly. 1
Who is the store of pure rapture sublime,
Surrounded by associates divine;
Who is the beloved Lord of their lives,
To Vasudha and Jahnavi, his wives;
Who is into constant ecstasy thrown,
And who is not to the dull minded known;
Worship Nityananda, root of the tree
Of the purest devotion constantly. 2
Who is beloved of Sri Sachi's son,
Who affords all the world his benison;
Who is divine embodied happiness;
Who helps those sunk in Kali's sore distress;
Who like a merciful helmsman doth guide,
And takes them across to the other side;
Who did the teachings of Hari explain,
That they might cross this existential main.
Worship Nityananda, root of the tree
Of the purest devotion constantly. 3
"O dearest brother! how will mankind gain
"Expiation from Kali's taint and stain?
"Unless you contrive a means, how can they
"Without much difficulty find the way?"
Who thus with his Almighty brother spoke,
His mercy and compassion to invoke.
Worship Nityananda, root of the tree
Of the purest devotion constantly. 4
Who with constant exhortation proclaims,
"O brethren sing Hari, sing Hari's names;
"Take your passage across this worldly sea,
"And I shall bear responsibility!"
Thus with his arms stretched out as he would roam,
He makes this proclamation in each home.
Worship Nityananda, root of the tree
Of the purest devotion constantly. 5
Who drinks the worldly ocean forcefully,
Like the pot-born sage who drank up the sea;
Who like the moon genial beams imparts
Blessings to the devotees' lily-hearts;
Who like Surya, the blazing god of day,
Drives the wicked, like dense darkness, away.
Worship Nityananda, root of the tree
Of the purest devotion constantly. 6
Dancing and singing, exclaiming with glee,
Who wanders on each path chanting 'Hari!'
Who joys to see his associates dance,
And on the good he casts a gracious glance.
Worship Nityananda, root of the tree
Of the purest devotion constantly. 7
Who clasps his brothers' tender lotus-hand,
Then mutually each others' faces scanned,
And the joy of their sweet love was distilled,
Their hearts with profound ecstasy were filled;
And thus he roams the streets and peopled towns,
And all in loves' intoxication drowns.
Worship Nityananda, root of the tree
Of the purest devotion constantly. 8
Whoever doth with love reiterate
This hymn of delectable verses eight,
Recalling Nityananda constantly,
Of love-rapture the repository;
The treasure of discerning devotees,
With humours of sublime varieties,
May Nityananda to them grace impart,
And keep his lotus-feet within their heart. 9
