Commencing SB.X.XXVII.1-7
(Sri Suka said) Govardhan had been lifted and restored, And protection from the rain did afford; Now Surabhi, the mother of the kine, With Sakra, came from Goloka divine. 1
Repentant Indra with shame sore oppressed, Approached, knowing well that he had transgressed, In seclusion he bowed his head and then, Touched his feet with his sun-like diadem. 2
Having thus heard and now seen Krishna's might, His own power subdued and put to flight, Proud no more of world lordship, bowed his head, And with palms joined together, to him said. 3
(Indra said) Thou art the pure existence absolute, Who penance, peace and glory constitute, By thy supreme power illusory, The current flows urged by the gunas three, But thy self refulgent bright radiance, Dispels restive passion and ignorance. 4
All this does darkest ignorance confound, Where fools are by the bonds of passion bound, And their latent desire pulls and draws, Which is of metempsychosis the cause; But thy chastisement should be understood, As inflicted on sinners for their good, As Almighty thou seekest all to bless, And art the guardian of righteousness. 5
Thou art the Lord, the preceptor and sire, Of all the vasty universe entire; Thou art inexorable time revealed, Who doth the great rod of chastisement wield; And thine own intent purpose to fulfil, Thou takest incarnation at thy will; And the arrogant of their pride relieve, Who vainly themselves as great lords conceive. 6
World rulers like myself in haughty pride, Like fools, have themselves misidentified, But seeing thou fearless in spite of time, Their vanity and arrogance resign; And then the righteous path eager pursue, As that the noble devotees ensue. Thou dost chastisement to the vain direct, Only for their relief and to correct. 7

SB.X.XXVII.8-11. Indra continues.
Plunged in delusion of pride in excess, Infatuated in my lordliness, I knew not thy power and dignity, And an offence have offered unto thee; It behoves thee to expiate the stain, And never may my mind be fouled again. 8
Thou hast made incarnation on the earth, Where burdensome demons have taken birth; Adhoksaja! of inscrutable will, Thou shalt the armies of the demons kill. And grant welfare to the good who entreat Thy grace, and serve thy lotus-flower feet. 9
Hail to the Lord illustrious divine! To the great self and supreme male sublime; Hail Vasudeva, hail Krishna adored! All hail to him, of Satvatas the Lord! 10
To him who takes forms of pure existence At will, constituted of consciousness; Hail to the one who is the seed of all! All hail to the soul of creatures, all hail! 11

Proceeding a little further with SB.X.XXVII. 12-23. Indra is still speaking.
Oh Almighty! with storms, my vile intent, To devastate the cowherd settlement, Was due to my rites being put aside, Which I took as an insult in my pride. 12
Yet thou hast shown thy disinterested grace, To thwart my enterprise, my pride efface; Since thou art Lord and preceptor divine, The self of all, unto thee I resign.' 13
(Sri Suka said) Thus Krishna. having been well glorified By the lord of clouds, he was satisfied; Smiling, the Almighty thus comforted, And resonating like a cloud, he said. 14
(The illustrious one said) Oh cloud compeller, just to favour thee, Thy sacrifice was disrupted by me; In pride indiscriminate thou wert blind, But now always recall me in thy mind. 15
Those blinded by power, and affluent, See not me with the rod of chastisement, But when I show my grace, compassionate, I cast him down from his exalted state. 16
Therefore, Oh Sakra, back to heaven wend, And may all good fortune on thee attend, Conduct thy delegated tasks, abide In peace, without or vanity or pride.' 17
Now Surabhi, the mother of the kine, Addressed Krishna in cowherd form divine, And with great respect unto him she bows, Along with all her progeny, the cows, 18
(Surabhi said) Oh Krishna, Krishna! mighty mystic Lord, The soul and the cause of the world adored Oh Acyuta, world Lord of majesty! By thy favour we have a Lord in thee. 19
Thou art our worshipfullest deity, Be our Indra and world divinity, Bring welfare to the gods and please the cows, And holy men and Vipras of firm vows. 20
Soul of the universe, thou takest birth, To lighten the great burthen of the earth; Now being ordered by Brahma on high, We shall conduct thy bath ceremony.' 21
(Sri Suka said) Thus Surabhi, Lord Krishna did invite, And bathed him in her own milk with delight; Airavata, the mighty tusker rears His trunk wherein the sky-Ganga he bears; Thus Indra with the gods and sages round, With sanctifying drops Lord Krishna cowned; The mother of the gods, Aditi hight, And all the matrons observed the grand rite, As the descendent of Dasarha famed, Was anointed, and as Govinda named. 22/23

Concluding SB.X.XXVII. 24-28
There Tumburu, Narada and the rest, Gandharvas, Vidyadharas, Siddhas, blest, And Charanas, all gathered in a throng, And raised the glory of Hari in song; Which of the world removes impurity; The wives of the gods danced in ecstasy. 24
The gods with all the celestial train, While praising, shower him with flower-rain; All people felt the excess of delight In the three worlds, at such a wondrous sight; All graces and all blessings did abound, The cows from milky udders drenched the ground. 25
The rivers flowed with fine flavours replete, The trees exuded streams of honey sweet; Unlaboured orchards fruits and flowers yield, The mountains showed their gems, before concealed. 26
During Krishna's bathing ceremony, Oh scion of the Kuru dynasty, Oh dear one, beasts gave up their savagery, Sans their natural animosity. 27
Thus Sakra, having worshipped, reverent, Govinda and the cowherd settlement, He took his leave which Krishna did impart, And did with the gods to heaven depart. 28
And thus ends Canto twenty seven in Book ten of the great and glorious Bhagavata Purana, the text beloved of swan-like saints, sung by the son of Vyasa.

Well, commencing SB.X.XXVIII.1-8, the conclusion of which will complete the term of my labours in rendering the first forty five Cantos of Book ten. If Deus vult and it is daiva iccha, then I may undertake the other forty five Cantos of the Pura Lila. Canto XXIX can be found on the first page of this thread, third entry onward up to Canto forty five.
(Sri Badarayani said) Nanda, on the eleventh lunar day, Worshipped Janardan in the prescribed way; By fasts, and then before the morning beam, He bathed him in Kalindi's sable stream. 1
Now Nanda bathed before the end of night, Before the dawn had given forth the light; Then suddenly for this venal offence, He was seized upon and conducted hence, By a stern servant of the water god Varuna, who took him to his abode. 2
The cowherds, missing him, were terrified, And, 'Oh Krishna, Oh Rama!' loudly cried; The Almighty, having heard their lament, Perceived the abduction, and straightway went To the presence and watery abode, Of Varuna, the mighty water god. Thus he who relievs fear and suffering For his devotees, arrived there, Oh king. 3
Observing that Hrishikesha had come, And made his way into his watery home, He offered worship with pomp, delighted, And joyous to behold his guest, he said. 4
(Sri Varuna said) Today I have the highest prize received! The purpose of my existence achieved; As those who serve thy feet, Oh Lord divine, Attain the transcendental state sublime. 5
All hail to thee, Oh illustrious Lord, To the Brahman and supreme self adored; The Maya whereby the world is evolved, Has no trace in thee, ever uninvolved. 6
This attendant of mine, the fool, knew not, And wrongly brought thy father to this spot; In ignorance this was performed, and thus, Thou shouldst forgive this crime, and bear with us. 7
Oh Krishna, deign to confer thy mercy, For thou art gracious and everything see; Here, Oh Govinda, is thy father, go And take him home, who love thy father so'. 8

Concluding SB.X.XXVIII. 9-17
(Sri Suka said) Thus Almighty Krishna was satisfied, The ruler of all rulers and the guide, And with his dear father he homeward went, Which brought his relatives joy and content. 9
Now Nanda was amazed at what he saw, To see the guardian god filled him with awe, And how that god with pomp and opulence, Adored Krishna with humble obeisance, While his attendants salutation make, And thus to his relatives Nanda spake. 10
The cowherds heard with curiosity, In anticipation of things to be, And gan to think, 'will the Almighty Lord, Take us to his divine realm for reward?' 11
Thus the illustrious who all things sees, Perceived the musing of his devotees, And to fulfil the perfection they sought, Compassionate, thus to himself he thought. 12
'The people urged by passions do not know, And by their deeds transmigrate high and low, To them reality is quite unknown, And aimlessly, without a goal they roam'. 13
Thus thinking, the most merciful Hari, Induced the cowherds with their eyes to see His realm divine of transcendental light, Beyond all darkness, radiating bright. 14
They saw truth and consciousness without end, The light of Brahman everywhere extend; Which when sages are from the gunas free, In abstract contemplation always see. 15
The cowherds in the Brahma lake were urged To take a dip, whereafter they emerged, They beheld Brahaman, then came to the shore, Where Akrura had his vision before. 16
Nanda and all the cowherds were amazed, As in supreme felicity they gazed, There Krishna was worshipped as supreme Lord, And was with Vedic hymns and chants adored. 17
And thus ends Canto twenty eight in Book ten of the great and glorious Bhagavata Purana, the text beloved of swan-like saints, sung by the son of Vyasa.

A couple of exquisite stanzas. Sri Hari addressing the harassed muni Durvasa.
श्रीभगवानुवाच अहं भक्तपराधीनो ह्यस्वतन्त्र इव द्विज । साधुभिर्ग्रस्तहृदयो भक्तैर्भक्तजनप्रिय: ॥ ६३ ॥
śrī-bhagavān uvāca ahaṁ bhakta-parādhīno hy asvatantra iva dvija sādhubhir grasta-hṛdayo bhaktair bhakta-jana-priyaḥ
The Illustrious one said;
I am subjugate to my devotee, And will not to act independently; The holy ones have ta'en my heart, O seer. The lover e'en of my lover is dear. ...... साधवो हृदयं मह्यं साधूनां हृदयं त्वहम् । मदन्यत् ते न जानन्ति नाहं तेभ्यो मनागपि ॥ ६८ ॥
sādhavo hṛdayaṁ mahyaṁ sādhūnāṁ hṛdayaṁ tv aham mad-anyat te na jānanti nāhaṁ tebhyo manāg api
The holy ones are in my heart forsooth, In hearts of holy ones I bide in truth; They know of naught saving me, and again, Nor do I think of anything but them.

Lord Brahma on the efficacy of hearing Hari kathaa. These are some verses as I'm going through Vishnu Puri's Bhakti Ratnavali, translated by Swami Tapasyananda. Versified by me.
५ ॥ ye tu tvadīya-caraṇāmbuja-kośa-gandhaṁ jighranti karṇa-vivaraiḥ śruti-vāta-nītam bhaktyā gṛhīta-caraṇaḥ parayā ca teṣāṁ nāpaiṣi nātha hṛdayāmburuhāt sva-puṁsām
Whoso the fragrance of thy feet imbibe, Like lotuses, as holy texts describe; And wafted on the breeze of scripture hears, Of odours apprehended by the ears, Whereon thy grace and favour they entreat, And cling with ardour to thy lotus-feet; Thou makest entry in their lotus-heart, Where bound by affection thou canst not part!

When Sukra was requested to make good the interruption in Bali's Visvajit rite by Vamana deva, he made the following observation.
मन्त्रतस्तन्त्रतश्छिद्रं देशकालार्हवस्तुत: । सर्वं करोति निश्छिद्रमनुसङ्कीर्तनं तव ॥ १६ ॥ mantratas tantrataś chidraṁ deśa-kālārha-vastutaḥ sarvaṁ karoti niśchidram anusaṅkīrtanaṁ tava
In mantras and in rites what flaws may be; In time, place, substance, the discrepancy, All shortcomings are straightway nullified, When thy name and renown are glorified.

Bhagiratha to Ganga on how her force might be stayed.
The soul of bodied souls, Rudra, I deem, Can bear the onrush of your violent stream, Who sustains all the universe as both The warp and woof that forms a piece of cloth.

Well, putting to one side Padyavali for the present, I would like to proceed into the Uttaraardha, which is to say, the second or other half of Srimad Bhagavatam, Book ten, Cantos XLVI- XC. Here are texts 1-6
Sri Suka said; The chief minister of the Vrishni clan, Brhaspati's pupil, a worthy man, In all affairs most wise to comprehend, Was Uddhava, Krishna's beloved friend. 1
Once Hari, who removes grief and sorrow For those who seek refuge in him and bow, His friend's pure devotion did understand, And seized within his hand Uddhava's hand; Knowing him singularly devoted, The one Illustrious unto him said. 2
Hie thee to Vraja, O Uddhava dear, My sorrowing parents revive and cheer; The cowherd damsel's grief you must assuage, By conveying to them this my message. 3
They have dedicated for my dear sake Mind and breath, and their body's needs forsake; They know me as their own beloved one, To me, their lover, their minds and souls run; Whoever gives up worldly convention For my sake, I grant them my protection. 4
O dear one, since I did from them remove, In absence of the object of their love, Gokula's damsels, in perplexity, Are oppressed by grief and anxiety. 5
These cowherd dames, extremely dear to me, Cling on to life with great difficulty, And thus they suffer severance and burn, Because I promised I would soon return. 6

Continuing SB.X.XLVI. 7-13
Sri Suka said: Thus being addressed, Uddhava, O king, The message of his Master thence did bring, Mounting upon his car he forward went, To Nanda's distant cowherd settlement. 7
The fortunate one arrived in the town Of Nanda's Vraja as the Sun went down; And dust from the tramping herds made a screen, Wherefore he passed into the town unseen. 8
The cows in season caused the bulls to fight, And bellow loud and exercise their might; While other cows who burdened udders bear, Seek out their calves with assiduous care. 9
The snow white calves here and there skipped and bound, Adorning with beauty the region round, The whirling sound of churning did ascend, Which with winding of bamboo flutes did blend. 10
The cowherd dames attired in bright weeds, Sing of Bala and Krishna's hallowed deeds; And all the cowherd men by love inspired, Were all neatly adorned and well attired. 11
In honour of Fire, Sun, guests and cows, The gods, manes and Vipras of firm vows, The cowherd's homes, commodious and bright, With wreaths, incense and lamps were full of light. 12
Thus delightsome was all the forest round, Where flower frequenting humming bees resound; The ruddy geese and water fowl respond With cooing as they glide the lotus-pond. 13

Continuing SB.X.XLVI. 14-20
As soon as he arrived at Nanda's home, The latter hastened forth with warm welcome; Krishna's adherent dear honoured with grace, And seemed him Vasudeva to embrace. 14
Then having been received with courtesies, Fed with rare dainties and seated at ease, Rubbing his feet while he lay on the bed, The blessed Nanda to Uddhava said. 15
O most fortunate one, do deign to tell, Is my friend, Sura's dear son, faring well? I trust that he in peace and comfort lives, With his own children, friends and relatives. 16
How fortunate that Kamsa with his kin, Have met with death by reason of their sin; And he who brought the pious Yadus pain, With all his accomplices hath been slain. 17
Doth Krishna entertain the memory Of his mother, myself and family? Doth he recall his friends and comrades dear, The cowherds, and the forest pastures here? Doth he recall the cows and Vrindavan, Doth he remember still mount Govardhan? 18
Will Krishna ever come this way again To see us? then we may occasion gain To look upon his handsome smiling face, If he returns but once here to this place. 19
He saved us from the raging forest fire, The wind, the rain, the bull, the serpent dire; All deadly adversity was o'ercome, By Krishna, the great illustrious one. 20

SB.X.XLVI. 21-26, concluding Nanda's speech.
Recalling Krishna's deeds our mind beguiles, Attended with his glances and his smiles, His charming laughter and his speech, dear one, Slacken our faculties and senses stun. 21
The streams, the hills, the forests and the vines, Bear of Mukunda's feet the sacred signs; And who the places of his sports doth see, Becomes absorbed in self identity. 22
When I deliberate and weigh the odds, It seems Krishna and Rama are chief gods, Who for the purpose of the gods display Their exploits, as Garga was wont to say. 23
Kamsa, strong as a mighty elephant, Was slain; the champions to death were sent; The tusker chief they slaughtered as in play, As loin king disposes of his prey. 24
He broke the mighty bow of three spans length, And like an elephant displayed his strength; Nay more, for seven days he took his stand, And held up the great mountain with one hand. 25
They killed colossal Daityas in the fight, That had put gods and e'en demons to fright; Pralamba, Dhenuka, Arishtha too, And Baka with others, with ease they slew. 26
