Thanks Visakha, have you translated any verses from Padyavali? It would be great if a handfull of pen-pushers could colaborate each contributing any amount of verses in keeping with the anthology. What I mean is that as the verses are composed by many hands, many hands could translate it, allowing variety in diction, style, turn of phrase and all that.

Good idea, madanmohanji. That would be a good way to handle this text.

Madanmohanji,
I haven't, but I will surely give it a try. I know zero Sanskrit, so I would first have to find a Bengali edition to work with. I'm loving Caleb's Bhagavad Gita translation, by the way. You're so lucky to find all these rare volumes.

Dvarakanatha Shri Krishna, before the departure of his dear friend Sudama, speaks to the latter in words like these,
Well, if I say, 'Go not my friend', ah me! Such beseeching would not auspicious be; And should I say, 'Go now', and this approve, You would think I had very little love; And if I say, 'Remain', and this insist, 'Twould seem a stern commandment, if dismissed With, 'Do whate'er you will by your intent', May be construed as cold, indifferent; Dear friend, Sudama, 'tis not flattery, Nor speak I as in common courtesy, But until the two of us meet again, May recollection of our love remain.

We are not logicians or poets wise, Nor did Vedanta's teaching realise; We do not enter into stern debate, Nor argue points of dogma with the great. We are but the menial slaves, forsooth, Of some handsome deceptive cowherd youth.

Of Krishna's name the glory I extol, Which polishes the mirror of the soul; Extinguishes the worldly forest fire; Quenching the mind's insatiate desire. Or as the moon who sheds his balmy rays, The lily of eternal good displays Its spreading petals and invigorates The Wisdom-bride, whose favour generates A swelling tide in love's unbounded sea, And grants at every step pure ecstasy; Th'entire self is cleansed of every stain. (In Krishna's name such benefits obtain.)22

O Mura's foe, whose greatest joy derives In devout off'rings from the brahmans' wives; The highest pleasure did to you suffice, Partaking of Vidura's fragrant rice; Moreover, you were very satisfied, With milk products that Vraja's cows provide; When your dear friend brought a gift of chipped rice, It's loving value was beyond all price; The joy you took from Yashoda the blest, By sucking from her milky fountain breast; And all the satisfaction that excels, In confections of Vraja's damosels; Even so, Lord, may you be pleased to dine, Joyful, upon this offering of mine. 116

Lord Hari casts fond glances from his eyes, Whose melting beauty with the lotus vies, Upon his dear beloved devotees; He is in eager contemplation sought, By mystic yogins, who to him resort; Yet those absorbed in meditative trance Seek only for their own deliverance. He is the fountain source and resting place Of radiant charm and sheen of pearl-like grace, And sweet surpassing beauty, at whose sight Fair Radha's eyes dilate with pure delight. May Hari's lotus-eyes and beauty rare, Assuage your grief and ease your worldly care!

The indescribable and great glory of Krishna's name is described by an anonymous poet in words something like these,
Great Lord! should someone merely wish to sing Your holy name, his sins start trembling; The great Illusion falls into a daze, At his toe nails would Chitragupta gaze, And even Brahma, joyful and impressed, Prepares welcome, as to a worthy guest. O Lord, such power in your name there is, Ah what, indeed, may we say more than this?

Most of the verses that I had posted back in 2010 have been reworked, and perhaps I will add them little by little.

Well, I have reworked most of them now into heroic couplets, so they might be worth perusing again.

Padyavali 147 "Ah welcome Shambu, and Brahma to you; Sit on my left; Skanda! how do you do? Greetings lord Indra, I trust all is well; And lord Kuvera too, it's been a while." Thus talking in his sleep, the enemy Of Kaitabha, brought great anxiety To Yashoda, who fell into dismay, And said, ' Dear child what nonsense do you say?' Then with gestures to drive off and avoid The evil spirit, she herself employed. May Krishna's sleep-talk, and Yashoda's fuss Grant safety and protective grace to us. Shri Mayura

Alas! to whom should it be told, or who Would lend it credence, taking it for true? When I insist the truth of my report; That now the Divine Absolute holds sport, As prince of the cowherders, and abides In bowers, dallying with cowherd's brides!
