This is an excellent anthology of Bhagavat verses by Visnu Puri. The translation I have is by Tapasyananda Swami of the Rama-Krsna Math. Being a bit dissatisfied with some of his translations I thought I would Have a go at re-doing it and editing the translations. Visnu Puri is reputed as having been an associate of Gauranga Mahaprabhu and was commissioned by the latter to make a necklace of jewels strung from the gems of the Bhagavat.
The Invocation.

1. Suka's epilogue to Book 10.
Hail to him in whom all things dwell, known to the world as Devaki's son; surrounded by attendants of the Yadu clan; whose mighty arm quells all vice, who effaces the sins of the moving and inert, the charming smile of whose radiant face rouses Cupid in the damsels of the country and the court.

5. Suta's salutation to Suka.
I bow to the son of Vyasa, the preceptor of contemplatives, who out of compassion and with the radiant light of his own intuitive self-realisation, lit the lamp of this esoteric Purana, the exclusive essence of all scripture,, for those caught in the whirligig of transmigration and seeking to overcome the blinding darkness of ignorance.

I hope I have not corrupted anything too much with my editing.
Now the text begins with various citations dealing with the general characteristics of bhakti.

The highest duty of man is to adopt such conduct as will generate devotion to the lord who is beyond perception; which is unmotivated and unimpeded, and by which the self attains ultimate beatitude.

Wow. This is great, madanji. Please keep them coming. I think Visnupuri was a bit earlier than Mahaprabhu, one of those Sankarites who appreciated and emphasized bhakti. I have a reprint of the old Sacred Books of the Hindus version. The translation is flawed, but it also included the author's own gloss, which is good. So we not only get a fine selection of verses from the Bhagavata, but the author's own commentarial reflections.
Mind if I bind your reworked translations together into a pdf? Perhaps eventually we can put out a volume in our classics series.

Dont mind at all. I remember Jiva making some referance to this work in his Tattva Sandarbha where he lists some commentaries and anthologies. Also, if memory does its job, I recall Kavikarnapura ( I wonder how you would translate his name ' Ear-crammer poet'? ) mentions him as one of the nine prominent sannyasi followers of Gauranga, but I cant find it now; if I find it later I'll post it.

12. Suta to Saunaka.
The one supreme being, assuming the adjuncts of Nature's three attributes, Sattva, Raja and tama, for the purpose of the world's continuity ( as well as creation and disolution ) becomes known as the trinity, Hari, Virinci and Hara. Of these the form conjoined with the attribute of Sattva certainly conduces to the greatest blessing for mankind.

16/17. Suka to Pariksit.
The Vedas ultimately reveal Vasudeva; ritual sacrifice is to please Vasudeva; yoga is communion with Vasudeva; good works are for dedication to Vasudeva; knowledge culminates in Vasudeva; penance is to propitiate Vasudeva; virtue is cultivation of Vasudeva and the supreme destiny is Vasudeva.

The referance in Gaura Ganodesh Dipka. According to that he is not an actual associate, as you suggested Nitai, but one of the previous Gurus in the list from Madhva. The line reads;
zrImadviSNupUrI yastu bhaktiratnAvalIkrtah/
And the blest Visnu Puri by whom was compiled Bhakti Ratnavali.

When the faculties of cognition and volition are unified as an exclusive mental disposition directed to the Almighty, spontaneous and without extrenuous motive, that is Bhakti or devotion.
