I think, Malati, that this depends largely on whether or not you think there is such a thing as dead, inanimate matter in the first place. At the sub-atomic level, there is quite a lot of activity going on in every particle, every neutron, proton, electron and photon. What is consciousness other than some level of awareness of oneself and that outside of oneself? Can a robot ever be self aware? This discussion was going on at the local Masonic lodge where I was a dinner guest a few weeks ago. One of the gentleman there was talking about artificial intelligences and the threats they could pose in the future if they ever did become self-aware and turned against humanity. My remark was to the effect that there had to be a self there in the first place, and that they were talking about creating life.
